The new crank sensors arrive tomorrow, and I will try to install them Wed or Thurs. I received some very good directions from Maranello Motorworks in Denver, so I have a better idea on how to do it. I will take some pictures and probably write a small paragraph on how to do it.

Hopefully, the crank sensors are the problem. If not, I will move on to more diagnosis.

It seems it was the sensor or sensors. The rear sensor was pretty easy, but that didn't fix it. The front one is impossible to get to. Upside down, oil cooler off, under car, etc. I did it with a mirror, flashlight, nuts glued to the socket, etc. And (here is the biggie), even though they are the same part numbers, the front sensor mount threads are closer together, so the new sensor holes have to be slotted. I thought that was only on the 308s, but same on a 1989 328. That front one was very had to get to, and harder to put back on.

Both sensors were covered in oil, and the center magnet part was blocked by grime. They are put on at the factory before other hoses and stuff, because the old ones can not be removed along their paths. The ends are too big to slide out around hoses and fittings. Once the new ones were in (routed better) I cut the old ones out.

I will start a new thread with some specific directions. Well worth letting someone else do it, because of that front sensor.

The alarm/ immobiliser on mine was wired into the fuel pump and the coil supply. Assuming yours is under the passengers feet, you should find 1 or 2 sets of wires coming out of it which link into these circuits, you can try linking each one out in turn , or both to see if you clear your problem should it return.

Lasted one day. Won't start a hour away at a friends house. Getting spark now; currently no fuel. Will fire with a little starting fluid, then die. Relays click, fuses are good. Frequency valve not buzzing.

This is a new problem. Sensor change was the previous problem.

CONCLUSION: The original no-start from the beginning of this thread (2007) is unknown. The current no-start appears to have been the two crank sensors. On the 328, there is one at 4:00 o'clock, and one at 10:00 o'clock on the bell housing on the driver's side. I do not know which one is the tach input and which one is the crank sensor, but we changed both. I am not really sure that they were malfunctioning, but maybe more covered in grime and oil. The center magnet was covered, so maybe it just stopped reading. Of course, at that point, why put the old one back in.

I will try to write a bit on how to change them, but my conclusion was to let someone else do it if you can. The forward one at 10:00 o'clock is blind, out of reach, and defies gravity getting the new bolts on.

Many of the comments here helped me diagnose and solve the second problem a day later:
