Doesn't make this one happy, it just gave that tool Elton a guaranteed win from the first turn of a wheel. The start is the thing he is worst at, so remove that, and the merc, being the class car of the field, means he's guaranteed to win. Nico was faster for the whole race, save a few laps while he had a gearbox issue, at times a second or so faster. He would have caught and passed Elton towards the end with the pace he had until his gearbox went wrong. Maxie held him up for quite a bit, which was the only positive of the show, but probably cost us a fight for the front rather than the usual boring ending

 

It will only get worse next year when they will allow WIDER tyres. Wider tyres = less grip on the wet + more spray !!!

Whatever the grooving on them, large tyres cannot dissipate water and therefore lead to more aquaplaning. Downforce doesn't work at low speed either.

It's the F1 regulations that bring this situation; we should have narrower tyres of higher diameter. Michelin proposed that; the FIA refused them.

Remember Senna's amazing drive at Donnington in the wet? One that showed him to be a true great, well that would be denied to him now.

I'm not blaming CW personally but all the top people need to know this sport is dying. Silverstone is always popular and we have a British champion but did anyone notice the lack of crowds in Austria ? Empty grandstands on the pit straight on race day ?

It's just a knee jerk from Jules unfortunate death, which Charlie was responsible for, IMHO.

 

Not going into the Jules death responsibility again, but we can't bring out the SC every single time there's a bit of rain in the air. Cars where on inters at that race at the time of the crash btw.

Rules stipulate that a SC start has to be decided 6 minutes before the formation start. This decision was made before that even. Even so, the rule is dumb. Let them out on the formation lap, if it IS then too wet they can then throw the SC out in front of the field. Problem solved.

But it wasn't too wet. They could EASILY driven here at race pace. That cars had some difficulty with the tiny bit of wet patch on T1 is something that's part of a drying track and slick tires.

F1 has started properly in WAY worse conditions and it all went well. F1 and it's opening laps yesterday caused them to be the laughing stock of the racing world.

 

News flash—auto racing is dangerous. Every single driver accepts that risk, so I don't see how a decision to have a standing start in the rain is a moral decision someone like Whiting has to ponder.

 

The current state of F1 is doing a great job of diluting talent and thereby itself: can't race in the wet, can't manage the car without an engineer whispering in your ear, can't defend a position without risking a penalty, etc. F1, the sport of p*ssies...

I see your point; the average viewer doesn't really care. About F1 history, or about the current state of the sport. Attention span is just not there...

 

I know many average viewers (i.e. occasional viewers, not particularly into the drivers, team or tech, just turn on the odd race here and there to watch a bit, and often switch off again) and without fail, every single one of them thought the safety car debacle was exactly that - a debacle.

 

I guess I'm average.....but I consider average F1 viewer to be pretty informed about the sport. Not too many casual fans are going to get up in any American time zone from 4 to 7 AM to watch live unless they're fairly dedicated.

I thought it was the right decision at the time, but the safety car should have been brought in about 3 laps sooner.

I'm more upset with the fact that Mercedes - the team - was not penalized for the clearly illegal radio communications. They should have lost all of Nico's constructor points and had to pay a hefty fine.

I was hoping and praying that LH would crash into the safety car (he came really close one time), because then, by FIA logic, all safety cars would be banned...

 

I agree on the farce at the start. I have watched F1 since the 80s and that was always
what I was looking for the most: wet races, the start! There was nothing comparable.
I used to criticize Indy cars because the starts (non ovals) and even more when it
rained. Now it's all gone to the drain.

In Monaco, it could have been the right choice, after all, it's a confined place with oil
everywhere, but in Silverstone? Sacrilege. If was the right decision (it was not),
once that happened, the SC should have left by lap 2. The sun was all out by then.

To me, the issue with Bianchi was not the rain alone, it was the rain combined by the
lack of visibility, it was getting very dark already. Yesterday, with the sun, it was
perfect for a rain race.

 

I'm gonna say, if you support halos, but want a normal start when wet then reevaluate how you really feel about safety.
