replaced most of the hoses today. Remember: if you have a hard time attaching a hose over a tube: heat the hose so it gets more flexible.

    Great job Stefan.
Putting an 8 into a QV wasn't so obvious, I guess?

Well, especially the accelerator cable is a point of attention because it is attached to the engine block in a different way, so I was very fortunate I had a spare 8 cable! All the other connections are about the same.

Just installed the refurbished coolant reservoir. Here's how it currently looks like.

But I have one important question for the Mondial 8 owners:

If you look at the last picture, there are 2 hoses running from the K-Jetronic warmup regulator: according to the schematics, the hoses should be placed as follows (see schema):

    1. From the top of the regulator to the bottom of the plenum air intake tube
    2. From the right side of the regulator to the top of the plenum air intake tube

The tubes on my car came the other way round, so my question to you: how is this with your cars? Do these hoses cross one another or do they run in parallel?

today we tried to start the engine. No success, presumably the interim battary was not powerful enough and the started moved a bit but not enough. Probably also the engine was not lubricated enough by the oil, so we turned the crankshaft manually but even then, no luck. Second attempt is next Monday.

Then we saw that the pinion inside of the Jetronic was blocked and we had to make it slide again with compressed air, which finally worked and Guido cleaned the pinion and re-installed it.

After 2 big explosions, we finally arrived where the previous owner did: the alternator turns the crankshaft, fuel distribution is OK and a spark is also delivered through the spark plugs, but the engine does not fire up. It looks like the system is out of sync: the spark is delivered at the wrong moment but as far as we can see, the order of the sparks is fine. We ended up 2 with a lot of fuel fumes concentrated in the big tubes with a big BANG when the spark reached the fumes...

We cleansed the distributor and put it all together again without an issue, so that went well. About the fact that it doesn't fire up: we think this may be caused by the spark distributor cap and coils being out of sync with the order of the cylinders. Fuel runs in them, but the spark doesn't arrive in time.

Here is an easy one to check, are the TDC sensors from bank 1to4 and 5to8 plugged into their respective Digiplex units and from those the spark goes to the right coils/distributor/bank? If they are crossed over at any point, you may have the explanation for the spark being out of tune,

    cheers

We all checked that. Strange enough we get spark on cil 1 about 15 degrees after TDC...!?with engine NOT running. We cannot find how much it must be for a not running car. WM gives 2 degrees before TDC on 1000 Tr/min.

Sweet work! Ps. There is a 25 euro rebuild kit for the fuel distributor replacing all the rubber o-rings.

Timing light is an excellent tool for diagnosis by the way.
    Great work though :)

Whoppa! Just got a phone call from my mechanic... Good and bad news.

The 2 flywheel sensors were switched, so the ignition was OK after swapping them.

The bad news: they found out that the previous owner of the engine encountered a snapped timing belt with the result that some valves are bent! Some cylinders have 0 compression, so next thing is a revision of both cylinder heads...

So, now I know again what to work for :)

Here's the engine of my 'golden' Mondial (you see him standing on jack stands in the back). Tomorrow I'll learn more on what has happened.

Ask the Valenti boys to check if the cames are in the right places....Still think there went something wrong during installation by the pre owner.
