    This is what is left of a Turbo charger Compressor end when it failed at about 22 000 rpm- burst out of the housing in several pieces and flew through the machinery space. A bit bigger than a 488 turbo unit.

    Holy cow. That's crazy. How much damage did it cause when it went flying out? I think my 4C needs a turbo like that. lol

    BTW, what kind of machine houses that turbine?

    That is the compressor end, not the turbine. If u look at the shape you can see the 2 halfs of the nose of the compressor. The smaller bits of metal were found all around the machinery space, like 20 feet away.The compressor failure caused the shaft seals to breakup and the exhaust gas went into the air filter/ silencer and set the engine on fire. The turbo cartridge weight was around 940 kilos. Its fitted to a marine diesel of 6000 HP.
    Fixed in 4 hours and running

    Here my Smart Fortwo turbo turbine separated from its shaft at 20000 rpm. Even so destroying the entire engine. You can see the total destruction of the fan blades. Took me six weeks to repare and still counting.

    So do you know what actually failed first and what caused the failure? Kudos on the quick repair.

    Speaking about a gas engine, for all the 'free' HP and torque I just don't like the idea of two or more units at +20K RPM at something like 1500 degrees to be the model of reliability. Especially when in normal automobiles things that spin usually are the first to fail (A/C compressor, water pump, PS pump, alternator, etc.).
