Should Ferrari drop F1

John, just noticed your tag; I have nominated you as an overseas member of the UPAoA (United Procrastinators Association of America), organized and successfully launched in the watershed year, 1946. But,

we have yet to hold our first meeting............

The rules changes that began to impact Ferrari negatively in the mid 2000s were initially put in be in place for 2003 season. Ferrari had only won 2 championships prior. Red Bull was allowed to dominate for 4 seasons before rules were changed to reshuffle the deck. When will the rules undergo radical change to end Mercedes dominance?

Ferrari could begin participating in U.S. Indy car racing. It would raise the profile of the series and since the U.S. is Ferrari's largest market, it makes sense from a marketing point of view.

 

The only time Ferrari would quit racing, is when Ferrari is on top. Ferrari is racing

I've said that because if they can't return to victories or some great podium results on the other half of the season, maybe with a brake for the next two years to develop the next car..thing would be better for them. Of course the cost of missing competition would be high but..

 

Even if they wanted they wouldn´t be allowed to. They have deals with FOM and sponsors, and they would loose the Constructors Championship money prize.

 

And the unique distinction to be the ONLY team in F1 which has competed in every year since its inception. You don't throw that medal away for a few meager years

Ferrari is the GOAT team.They will come back... eventually.

Think of it like this:

Last time Ferrari were winning, it was not being run by Italians.

 

They don't seem to care that Merc dominates every race. I remember when Ferrari was "dominant" (although nowhere NEAR this level of domination) and everyone complained loudly. Probably don't hear much of it now because LH is British and winning all the Grand Prix and most of the F1 press is British so they don't care.

No, that's impossible the British press would never show favoritism towards a British driver except on days that end in Y. Don't you think Damon, Nigel and Lewis are the greatest that have ever driven a car? Ever listen to BBC Five Live reporting on a race, it is painful to put it mildly especially Jennie Gow!

 

Think you need to recheck your facts, Mitch. Speed wise (compared to other cars) the Mercedes has been, by far, the fastest car around. Ferrari (or anyone else for that matter) NEVER had a car so much faster consistently over a season.

 

Best result was a 3rd place by Larousse IIRC.

Even if Bernie took away their special payments they would probably still stay.

Their marketing and history are just too entrenched in the sport to walk away.

 

Doubt very much if ANYONE would take away their special payments.If so they should walk away.
They bring so much attention to the sport those payments are well worth it.
Matter of fact you could develop a competing series based on Ferrari's participation

I ran the numbers. Here are the facts for you - Mercedes is the most dominant by a wide margain.


From 1988-1991 Mclaren won 39/64 races or 60%
From 2001-2004 Ferrari won 47/68 races or 69%
From 2010-2013 Red Bull won 41/77 races or 53%
From 2014-Present Mercedes has won 43/50 races or 86%

They have taken pole at 94% of the races. No one else is even close.

1999 - massive competition
2000 - Massive competition
2001 - Strong competition from both Mclaren and some of Williams. Ferrari more reliable
2002 - walked it
2003 - Williams mega, Kimi extremely consistent. Won it due to Kimi's engine expiring and 2 not at fault crashes
2004 - walked it

Ferrari really only dominated it 2 years. 2001 Schumacher was mega quick, and the rest (Barrichello, Coulthard, Hakkinen, the other Schumacher and Montoya) where just squabling among themselves taking points of each other.

As TifosiUSA posted...the Mercedes is far more dominant than anything EVER has been.
