Mulehead: I suspect you're thinking about Ecclestone's bribery trial from 2 years ago. If so then you missed the fact that he paid the authorities $100Million to drop the case - Which they promptly did: F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone pays to end bribery trial - BBC News

    As I have already posted:

Bernie was never on the train - It was a Royal Mail train and the only people on board (apart from the robbers of course!), were Royal Mail staff! ;)

The only link that Bernie has ever actually had with The Great Train Robbery is with the getaway driver - Roy James.

James had been a racing driver before he drove the getaway car and was a friend of Graham Hill. After being released from prison for his part in the robbery, James approached Bernie for a driving job, but Bernie turned him down.

However, Bernie decided to help James out, and knowing that he was not only a race car driver, but was also a qualified silversmith and goldsmith, he commissioned James to make a gold trophy for the British Grand Prix, and it is that very trophy that gets handed to the drivers on the podium to this day (the driver then has to hand the trophy back after the race is over as they don't get to take that one home! - They get a cheaper trophy to keep instead).

On the robbery itself, Bernie has previously stated:

"There wasn't enough money on that train, I could have done something better than that."

It's a strange quirk of the German Legal system that in such cases you can just pay the court off with Millions of Dollars and go free, but it's perfectly legal, and it's no surprise really that in true F1 style, Bernie made full use of the loophole! :)

Bernie's "tongue in cheek" answer wasn't meant to suggest he didn't know how much money was involved in the robbery, it was meant to mean that even back then he considered £2.6Million (£50.1Million in today's money) to be a piffling amount of money that was not worth his time or effort.

As for Bruce Reynolds, well let's see how he compares to Bernie:

    Time in prison:

Bruce Reynolds: 9 years (originally sentenced to 25 years but our stupid legal system means that nobody ever serves the sentence that they really should)

Bernie Ecclestone: Never been to prison.

    Net Worth:

Bruce Reynolds: Nothing - He was living on benefits at his time of death in 2013 aged 81 having been unable to get legal or illegal work after being released from prison (The criminal fraternity wouldn't touch him with a barge pole for any jobs as he was just too high profile!)

All of the money he "made" from the robbery, be it stolen money or money made from selling his story/writing books about the robbery was confiscated by the courts to help pay for the money originally stolen.

Bernie Ecclestone: $3.1Billion (according to Forbes)

Bruce Reynolds may have known differently, but Bernie Ecclestone made the better choices!

When you look into how Bruce Reynold's life ended up, I suspect he probably ended up regretting doing The Great Train Robbery in the end!

It's not about who got what. It's about what actually happened ;)

Bernie might have all the money in the world. So what.
