Aren't we up to the stage where we can put the GPS point in and then use a computed ILS to land the thing ?

The F-111s could do that 35 years ago with the analogue navigation system set up for computed ILS

RNAV approaches are pretty much exactly that, and they are almost everywhere now.
The autopilot will fly it down the slope just like an ILS.
However there are still cloudbase and visibility minimums and of course you still need lights at night time (or flaming toilet paper as the case may be).

    I trust the computers fine.
It's the idiots whom programme them that I don't. :D

It's more about the rules and what's legal than anything else.
Something you military types don't have to worry about as much...

The aircraft are certainly capable of flying a "virtual ILS" to any point you care to put into the system, but it's not legal (or necessarily safe) unless it's a published approach.
But as I said RNAVs are popping up everywhere, they don't require any ground based aids, and they are almost as good as a real ILS.

ILS must have been uncommon 30+ years ago as TAA use to regularly use our ILS at Amberley

And even had a Fokker Friendship "parked"on the side of the strip for several weels after clipping the arrestor cable with it's landing gear

    Lol!

ILS are still uncommon. There are only two in SA: Adelaide and Edinburgh.

Very cool, Ian. Making the grade as a RAAF pilot (or army or navy) is one HELL of an achievement.

Thanks, the young lady looks hot :)

You"ll need your limo driver's license when you're too old to fly :p

So what I got from that article is that there is a RFDS base in each state ?

Probably not VIC or TAS as they are too small ?

Lol! Yeah she's an excellent nurse and a lovely young woman.
She even made me some cakes for my birthday! :)

RFDS is divided up into sections. There are, or were, bases in all states but I think RFDS lost the contract in Vic to a private operator a few years ago so it is now "Air Ambulance" Victoria, not RFDS. Same in the northern part of the NT (hence why we technically only cover the southern half).
Pretty sure the SE Section has at least one base in Tas.

I was deemed to be far too good looking to be photographed for the story.
Didn't want to distract from the message, and all that.

We just had a few planes fly over Canberra for the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan.

RAAF C 130-J was first. Huge plane! We also got to see a pair of USAF B52's. Now there's something you don't see very often.

There's a couple more shots. Let me know if you want to see them.
