It's just marketing. Fred was just trying to make it nice with Hammi so he could be in the best race car as well. Just like he said a while ago that Robert Kubica was the toughest opponent he went up against.
An 'utter rubbish post' would be one that merely offers opinion and no evidence would it not? Hakkinen was about 36-37 and had been out of f1 a few years but had been thinking of making a come back at the time. Hamilton was a rookie and quite possibly driving an f1 car for the first time. Puts both at a disadvantage if you ask me. Nevertheless, 2.3 seconds over such a small track is an absolute caning. This thread is now redundant. Button was no match for Hamilton. I posted extensively about that in the Hamilton GOAT thread, no need to repeat it here. Class is subjective and unfortunately you do not earn championship points for it. Nor was class the subject of this thread. Mika was a top bloke I agree. Schumacher, on the other hand, as much as I respect him and was in awe of him when growing up, has no class. Hamilton is in the middle.

I have never seen a thread like "is Stirling Moss one of the GOAT?" or "is Juan-Manuel Fangio one of the GOAT" or is "Michael Schgumacher one of the GOAT"? This isn't even questionable, proof is that no-one needs to ask. Then I tried to have a look at your post on that thread, but it is way too long; short and to the point is always better. Ah, you know me William...I am the eternel optimist: I have always faith in my next-of-kin, I always believe "hard as steel" that one can only grow older, wiser, and better... But I won't spent a lot of time at it, either. I do indeed agree that just before him being banned, I was detecting one thing or two, here and there, more balanced, more open, in his words. So I thought, well, with a month to think about it, perhaps he will comme back having slightly mellowed. Well...seems I was wrong, he is back fully at his former self. Rgds

Yes...banned for expressing evidenced and well reasoned opinions. This thread was full of baseless statements before I got here. Hakkinen was a 2 x WDC who had been in f1 for a decade and was thinking of a comeback. His fitness level was this very high at the time and at 36-37 he wasn't that old. He wouldn't have been as fast as he used to be but then again Hamilton wouldn't have been as fast as he is now. He had a few hours of f1 seat time to his name. Hakkinen was destroyed. Even in his prime he's no match for Hamilton and never will be. The statistics were quite clear on this matter before this thread was even made. I'm done here. People who make baseless statements and treat their own opinion as facts aren't people you can reason with. Wish you all the best.
Well evidenced and well reasoned? LOL You obviously don't understand how much you lose being out of the car for 5 years. It was not some sort of serious test for Hakkinen, give me a break. Besides, in testing you don't know what fuel loads, setup, etc. is on the car so times are meaningless. Trying to draw some sort of comparison between a time from an up and coming GP2 driver and an old, retired driver who had been out of the car for years is quite simply laughable. Sounds like you need to watch some more Youtube videos...

We have sid in one thread claiming that he would beat Hamilton in his f1 car and a guy in another thread claiming alonso is below average. Trust me... I'm not the problem here. I come on strong because people make ludicrous claims everywhere you look.
Again, trying to make that leap is laughable for reasons already stated. Since you're a new fan it's understandable. I don't disagree that people say outlandish stuff on here. FWIW, Hakkinen stepped into the 1993 McLaren for the last 3 races of the year after they canned Andretti and promptly out qualified Senna his first race in the car. He came within 3 hundredths of Senna's time in qualifying the next race. He was very fast.
impressive stuff - which really goes to show just how quick Hamilton is. If you get some free time I suggest reading my long post on the GOAT thread. Anyone who reads it, I hope, will finally get how undervalued Hamilton is (around here at any rate).

Please, you are not the worlds greatest f1 journalist, no one here could mistake you for someone with a great insight on f1, whose opinion is valued above all others. Your long-winded promo-reel about Elton only serves to highlight how little your liking Elton relates to 'real world' f1, it's drivers, and the motivation behind its fans Elton is not the only horse in town, and is certainly nowhere near as epic as the post in question appears to insinuate. Hakkinnen was well over f1 when he did the test, and rather than assume Elton had never touched the car before, I'd find it rather more likely he had driven it, and likely quite a bit, even if some was 'sim based'. Hakkinen wasn't out there trying for ultimate lap time, he was 'driving the car', if you want to know if he's still capable of being fast, get him to drive you somewhere sometime, the guy is a demon, just like Kimi. (Before you say it, Elton wouldn't be fast, he'd be too busy spinning up his wheels with the radio blasting out some rap, arm out the window and his hat on backwards like a true bad boy, hoping lil Justin is watching him show off and hoon) We know you aren't very au-fait with f1 and how it all works, but rest assured, you don't retire, have five years where the cars and tech change totally, then just decide one day to get back in and immediately start putting in 'circuit records'.

All excellent points. I know Mika. He is a great guy and a racing enthusiast. A true gentleman. After racing, he and Schuey became friends out of mutual respect, and Schuey also credited Mika for pushing him so hard. And there is that bit about him outpacing Senna.

But why are you so intent to show that you indeed don't understand a thing to Formula One? It is obvious to anyone with a slight knowledge of Formula One that the ONLY THING that Ferrari does not need to change right now are the drivers...they are the only element of stability right now, and they deliver. The car and the team have such issues that changing the drivers is the least of their problems: they have to solve everything else first. As for a car so superior to the others that anyone can win with it...Jochen Rindt, a man not precisly known for his modesty, said after winning at Hockenheim in 1970 with the Lotus 72: "A monkey could win at the wheel of this car". He had a car superior by far to the others, but had the grace to acknowledge it. Rgds

I've offered my services in jest to Luca on numerous occasions when he was in charge, but I know I'm not f1 material, nor was I when I was 20. On motorcycles I was a tornado, in cars, not quite as talented but still better than a lot. However, f1 needs the Mercedes car to be caught, or lose its speed, then in equally matched machinery I believe Elton would have a hard time beating a number of guys, Vettel, ricciardo, rosberg, Alonso and even lil Maxie.... He wouldn't have had the last two championships without the cars dominance and Benz backing him over Nico. Nico has proven on countless occasion he is faster over one lap more often than not, and beaten him fair and square in many races. None of schumis number twos ever beat him with anything other than a lucky day
Well, I have to say I have been really disappointed in Nico this season, especially in how fast he lost his 43 points advantage... Rgds
