I had an x-ost on my 89 with converters and it was perfect. Then it went onto a euro 512TR with no converters at all and its a race muffler in my opinion in that configuration. VERY LOUD. The Tubi's Ive put on both with and without converters and they sound great either way and not near as loud as the x-ost. The x-ost is a small single can muffler and the tubi is a two can setup that separates the banks.

How about buying a spare muffler and stripping out the internals?

You can do any muffler setup inside and weld the case back up.

I bought a spare for the same reason. It is a project on my list.
