Yes I have seen the "patina" shots before...Do you have any pictures of the car in the shop after they stripped the red paint off?? It must been very hard and almost impossible to do without hurting some of the grey paint, and that's if they did not sand it before applying red. A very nice and important car.

Pretty ugly run of no sales going on now. Hard to know whether it's the cars, the market or fatigue after a long week. The room is as full as yesterday.

That's going to be up in a few minutes.

1.1M hammer sale on the Marmon 16 gets things back on track.

SWB starts at 5. Moves in 200k increments until 8.2, then 100k jumps to 9.3 with a bidder on the phone dropping out at 9.2. Passed lot. Auctioneer says he needs 9.4. Not clear whether there was another real bidder in the room.

A lot of people are now getting up either for a pit stop or to leave...

just saw it - wow! opening bid was $5M, went pretty quickly to $9.3 and auctioneer said he needed $9.4M. This was a classische car with extraordinary provenance. A 575M sold at $160K + buyer's commission

    "Without provenance"???
Absolutely not. The history of 3359 GT is fully known from day one to today. See also Gooding catalog and description.

There are currently at least 7 SWB Berlinettas on the market, that explains no sale. How many can the market absorb? How many do you need?

Thank you. The Miller 962-108 reached a $2.3m high bid at the Mecum Kissimmee auction in January, so that's two auction attempts with about the same result. It was also at Rennsport Reunion with a "for sale" sign, so clearly not motivated to sell.

Wonder what the reserve was for 962-122. I would have thought $750k would have gotten it done.

    Thanks again.

Marcel, I had misstated and corrected my post before I saw your correction. Completely agree with your assessment of the market, both the SWB's and the market generally. The truly unique and hyper-rare cars will continue to be strong, probably not as shockingly so as a year ago but the market for production cars smells quite soft

Thats it for Monterey 2016. I will be posting confirmed results for Bonhams, Gooding and RM when they become available, can take up to a week.

If anyone wants a spreadsheet with all results for the 1252 lots offered at all six sales (will include Mecum and Russo & Steele) (will hopefully include Rick Cole although they refused to even tell their publicist the results for the 2015 sale) over the past week, please email me and I will add you to my address list.
    Cheers

A great thank you, Timmmm... You cured the pain of these endless quests.
Am I right in concluding that most sales were done 20% under the estimates?

I have a Barn Finds book, which is currently still packed and hidden somewhere, and somebody owned 2 8c2900's and they had taken the engine out of one car and put it in the other that had been restored (?). The car that the engine came out of was completely original and unrestored, but IMO was not as stunning as the Touring examples and the body was by somebody else. I believe they had reunited the engine with the correct chassis but it remained unrestored and not driveable (I think?, and sad IMO)

But I am surprised that so many are supposedly original ... hmmm ...

These are most definitely my favourite car by a long way, especially the Touring ones.

Original imo means retaining mainly original components. #412021, the car Wessels discovered as part of a chassis bulldozed with the Testa Rossa #0720TR in the USA is not original because its 75%+ new but like the never ending saga of DP0003/0846, what is original?. Even post a south american restoration that likely compromised its total originality, the Revs Collection Mille Miglia winning Coupe remained whole, has its original chassis etc. so I would call it original. Very few would have all of their components but they are 80 years old so thats no surprise.
