Anybody ever use one of these?

Rhino Shelter Car Storage Bag, Rhino Shelter Car Pocket, MDM Car Storage Cover Bag, MDM Car Pocket

I store my 458 inside with a Ferrari car cover but last year a mouse got in. It chewed up the cabin air filter but luckily no other damage. A friend of mine has used this Rhino storage bag (also with a car cover to prevent the bag from scratching) for several years with good luck. He heats up the desiccant bags every year to dry them out and only replaces them every ~ 3 years.

I had a mouse sneak into F355 last year. It chewed up rubber seals and made it's way into the cabin and chewed up all my carpet, then brought all of the carpet into the front bonnet trunk. I imagine he was building a nest to have babies. I still have no idea how he got in.

For mouse etc protection. I leave a rat trap with a whole peanut in shell attached to the trigger. Check once in a while and reload. With a choice between the car and a fresh peanut the peanut always wins. GTS Bruce

I've had some mighty good luck with an inflatable capsule. I do leave a bag of mothballs at the vent to keep rodents out.

    Thanks for all the tips!

I did use dryer sheets but it made the car smell like Fabreeze instead of Italian leather. Mouse trap is a much better idea, I may use that plus the car bag.

    Jeff328,
Thanks for the source. I checked them out, they are here in Michigan so I will go with them.

    This community is great!

I ordered mine today; they are real nice and also it was a pleasure to do business with people who love cars.

Glad I can help! Their product (Car Jacket) is great; one of the few things I've used that I love to recommend to others.

BTW, dryer sheets, moth balls, and Irish Spring soap don't work at all. Before I went with the Car Jackets, I pulled a giant mouse nest out of my Pontiac GTO that was pretty much nothing but dryer sheets and soap. And they peed all over the moth balls.

Are you going to disconnect your battery for storage? I'm making an assumption that the cover does not have an access port for a battery tender.

With the Car Jacket, since the opening closes with a two-way zipper, it is possible to run a cord for a battery tender through it without compromising the environmental protection.

For 3 of the cars I store (including my 328), I just disconnect the batteries and let them sit undisturbed for about 5 months. My Aston Martin hates having the battery disconnected, so I keep that one on a tender all winter.

By the way, none of the cars are stored over winter in a climate-controlled space. Sometimes the air temperature is in the 50's, sometimes it's -15. I have zero problems with condensation, dust, or pests. Park them in late November, forget about them until mid April. They always come out of the bag exactly as they went in.

Personally I would still place desiccant bags within the cabin, trunk area as extra insurance.

Jeff, thanks for the feedback. I asked the owner when I ordered mine and that is what he told me, so I am glad to hear that works. I also asked him about out gassing during charging and he (politely) reminded me that batteries have been sealed for decades.
    LBBP,
You are right, and it does come with desiccant.

Yes. Place a desiccant bag or two inside the car as well and leave the windows rolled down a couple inches.

I had also asked them about charging issues and while I do think that there may still be some gas released (after all, the "sealed" batteries in my BMW and Aston both have vent tubes for a reason...) the charge rate is so slow the amount released is so small it doesn't matter. I've never had an issue with corrosion or anything else in that regard.

Another word about the desiccant they provide - it comes in small paper pouches that you can distribute around and in the vehicle. They say you can re-use the desiccant but not the paper pouches. So you have to empty the desiccant onto cookie sheets to dry in the oven and then place the desiccant in pans the next time you use it. I don't mess around with that, I just buy new pouches every season, it costs like $20 and saves a bunch of hassle.

I remember once seeing a self supported inflatable car capsule which was also made in the UK. That's what i really wanted before settling for the car capsule I have. After reading the reviews on the Carbag, i think I may just get one.

    David,
That looks like a good one too, and practical. And you can still see through it to ogle the car,

I asked John at Pine Ridge (Car Jacket) about not being able to see the car and he said that this was also an advantage: if you can't see it, others also can't.

    Jeff,
    What is your opinion?

When my cars in the bags they are at a storage location away from my house in a place with no windows, so I can't see them regardless of how they are covered.

My primary goals when my cars are stored are exclusion of pests and elimination of condensation. The car jacket keeps out insects and is not appealing to rodents, and since it contains the minimum possible volume of air when you zip the car in, it also contains the minimum possible volume of water vapor. The desiccant absorbs the remaining water vapor and keeps the relative humidity below the dew point at any temperature. So, no bugs, no mice, and no corrosion.

One of my Car Jackets is about 10 years old and has taken quite a beating. It has developed a few minor tears from being driven over on a gravel floor. But I have repaired the tears with duct tape and while it doesn't look pristine it still functions perfectly.

    Jeff,
Thanks for the quick reply. You are right, the primary goal is to protect the car. I will by a model to satisfy my withdrawal.

Mine came the day before yesterday; very professionally done, i am impressed. Let's hope I can delay using it until December (although last year we had 11 inches of snow a week before Thanksgiving)!
