At times they have found stuff. The problem is that none of it has been definitive proof of the "castaway" theory. Suggestive and definitive are miles apart. The castaway researchers still have a daunting chore. Gardner is big, hot, weather torn, and far away from anything. So finding an 80 year old camp site is a tall order. Then if or when they do (or did, possibly) find it, finding that key item of proof can still be elusive. Skeptics, which I am (but a hopeful one still), won't ever really settle for anything short of an identifiable body part, or the plane or part of it. I think that's the way it should be. However, if evidence that might be related is found, I can understand why some would want to move forward. I'm interested to see where it leads.

This on-going Earhart saga takes me back to a hangar at Sarasota-Bradenton Airport where we sat for hours chatting with Earhart's technical advisor, the late Paul Mantz, who had us spellbound with stories about Amelia's shortcomings. There were many, from poor piloting skills to disregarding advice from the experts who were hired to help her. He was convinced that she caused her own demise by eliminating critical radio equipment and relying on her "female intuitions". At the end of her transatlantic flight to the Europe mainland she had landed in a pasture in Ireland and had to ask where she was. Who knows where she ended up on her Pacific flight?

The photo certainly looks to me like it could be her. However, one would think the Japanese would have disclosed long ago if they had held her, or that it would appear in records. There are incredibly detailed records, both Japanese and American, of General Curtis LeMay's bombing runs over the Japanese mainland, for instance. Also, I'd be searching for other photos taken at the same facility around the same time.

Anyone watch the history channel 2 hour show on this topic? If so, what did you find new or worthy of further discussion?

Trouble is, that photo may have been taken in the late 20s or early 30s because it appears to be from before the Japanese completely took over. Not much Japanese presence in the harbor or on the dock, and no security detail around.

The most likely thing I feel is the most obvious thing.. crashed into the overwhelming empty spaces of the Pacific and nothing left to find.

I'd be happy if something definitive was found..

I've done some route calculations of what is reachable from east coast Aussie with a full fuel load of something affordable. I would love to visit so many scenic, interesting and historic WW2 locations..

The prospective islands mentioned in the search is in a big hole likely can't reach with the parameters I am using.. HI is on the horizon in this globe view.

This is true. I think the evidence from the Itasca radio operators, that they heard her radio signal growing stronger, then growing fainter, means she missed Howland Island, if only slightly. It appears her belly antenna broke on takeoff, which is why she could never hear the Itasca radio operators. I doubt she had enough fuel to make it to Mili, or Gardner.

But here's a wild idea: In her last radio messages, she said she was flying at 1,000'. Perhaps she could have spotted a Japanese freighter that was near the area, and thought it was Itasca, then successfully ditched in the ocean close the ship and was taken prisoner ?

Good point. It doesn't look like a wartime photo and no one appears to be under any stress.
