Are there any Firefighters out there own a Ferrari

Meh. It's not just Australia.. be a Teacher in Canada and you're pulling in six figures with full pension on retirement with benefits. And you get summers off.

(Note I believe that public sector workers in the US are in general underpaid for what they do for society and many members of society are overpaid for what they do for society.)

 

Previous owner of my 308 was a Fireman and lived in Laguna Beach! He had owned the car since 83 or 84 until 2010 when i acquired it. More power to him if he figures out a way to acquire one. Hey if my house were on fire I would want him to recognize and appreciate what I had in the garage and save it !

 

Public servants in Australia don't get paid much.

Here in Australia, the average Fireman in the big city makes around AU $60K per year.

My Wife's cousin is one in Melbourne, Australia. Works 4 on 4 off. Day and night shifts.

It was his childhood dream and it took him 12+ years to get in, but he is in now, is in his late 30's and it's his retirement job he said.

Where I live in rural Australia, Firemen earn a little more more money. They earn around $80K per year here, working the same roster. And the work here is a lot easier as we don't have skyscrapers or large manufacturing buildings etc to deal with. They normally are just putting out small riverbed fires and attending the occasional car crash scene, which are both not very common.

Cops?? They earn pretty much the same. I have a few friends that are Policemen and they earn a little more living out here than compared to the big city folk.

State school teachers used to get paid nothing a few years ago, but they threatened strikes and the Government acted and gave them all a pay rise.

It looks like they earn good money now, I might have to go and become an Executive Principle and earn $160K. Might take me 30 years to get there but.

Although professional salaries are nominally compatible to US, COL is >2x. FCars are over 2x and don't even get me started on house prices

My day job is that of an IT Consultant, but I'm also a Volunteer Firefighter in our community and town. The Professional Firefighters take care of the larger cities such as the neighboring Nyon (I live in Gland, a stones throw from Schumi's home).

The professionals take care of highway accidents, toxic spills etc, even if they happen at the entrance of our town. This town only has volunteers (over 100 of them) and we mostly take care of floods, but fires do happen as well.

And over here, it is the insurance companies that pay a volunteer firefighters salary, and only when we are "in action" or if we are in a training. Almost everyone has another job which brings in their proper salary, for example, our Captain is a Carpenter. All in all, a VERY busy volunteer could make north of $10k a year, but for most of us, it's just a few hundred bucks extra a month...
