Unlikeable fellow? Really? I thought that's more fitting to MS. And that's even a euphemism

Really? That's weird, I met him a fair bit, and not in a 'meet the public' type situation, and he was a very nice chap. On track he was a focussed winning machine, and like anyone, he could become angry at someone or something if it was warranted. As a person though, one of the nicest superstars you could meet.

Your comments explain a lot, thanks

I still confused at remembering where all these people were that hated Irvine back in the day? I can't remember him being unpopular, save with one angry Brazilian way back on Irvine debut, when he forgot the protocol and unlapped himself. I think you may be getting confused in your rush to defend a position that the world seems to have already decided upon

Irv the perv. Unthinkable that today a driver could get away with that nickname

Lewis caters very much to the ''new'' F1 fan, that followed him purely because he was a young Brit immediately in a fast car and going well. In their eyes, he can do no wrong, and that fanbase is the loudest of all.

Verstappen also has a big fanbase like that. Look at how many Dutch fans have tuned in; pre verstappen the average race had 500K viewers, yet now over a million Dutch fans watch the races...and now they have to pay for it too! Pre verstappen was free to air...Reading the comments, I see exactly the same comments from a huge amount of them that the Hamilton fans made and still do make. In their eyes, their driver can do NO wrong, and are by far the loudest.

Typically these are the type of fans that turn the TV off as soon as their driver is out.

What you are describing are fair weather fans. Every driver had/has them. Just look at how fan attendance on site as well as on TV in Germany declined when MS left.

And?? That's exactly the point bas was making. Eltons fans aren't on the whole the ardent f1 officionados, they are simply into the driver himself for whatever reason, maybe his attitude, his style, his lifestyle or whatever. To the rest of us, he undermines the sport and bring it into disrepute. As a champion, he should respect the sport, it was here before him, and it will be here after him. He isn't good enough for people to care if he drives or not. Were he to retire having been beaten comprehensively by Nico this year, few would give a damn

    This.

''Fair weather fans'' aren't a fan of the sport. As long as their driver is #1 it's all good to them. When he leaves, they leave.

    Not quite true:

One was banned and the other one had enough of the constant attacks. Doesn't mean they are no longer fans

I would say rather 4 or 5 of them were banned. Guess why...

Steve received a 1 or 3 month ban (can't remember which) and he never returned. Before his brain tumour he was much less aggressive and everyone got on with each other, despite him supporting ''the wrong guy'', because quite simply he had a balanced view. After he changed that, he didn't last much longer.

The other one was banned for good reason, constantly antagonizing others, constantly changing the story to suit his own argument, constantly attacking everyone. 2 or 3 others (but posted far less) where banned for similar reasons. Basically, if you come to a FERRARI forum and you only talk about ''the enemy'' that's generally known as trolling. I don't log on to hamiltonchat.com preaching my love for Ferrari, or say that Verstappen's block was fine, because I know exactly what sort of reaction I'll get.

Most of the regular posters in the F1 section are pretty open minded. We have a lot of different nationalities/cultures here too, which plays a part. You and I where 2 of the few posters who made no secret of being a Vettel fan, which definitely was the enemy here a few years back. Balanced and objective posting is all it takes. Don't post with blinders on and you'll be just fine here.

Hamilton on a journo blocking spree. Basically any reporter that doesn't support him gets blocked..

For real? That's bonkers. Maybe he is a Trump supporter...he does the same thing ; )

At some point Toto and Lauda will have to get involved in this. Obviously he also represents Mercedes and not just himself.

I assume they are required to talk to the press as a condition of their participation like in other sports. Is that accurate? There are TONS of athletes in the NFL that would love to never speak to the press again, but they do it week in and out because it's their job.

In general, I just think it's a dumb time to take on the press. Championship is on the line, everything else should be white noise.
