Thanks Mark. I've made some notes, and I'll talk to the shop I use to see if they can handle something like this in the future.

You and I know what DTC stands for...but just in case some of these other guys don't know, why don't you tell them :-j

It's all described in the 458 WSM. Bring them a copy ...

BTW, my 458 does the exact same squeak and I am not worried by that. Both oil levels (hydraulic oil and gearbox oil) are OK, so should not be the root cause.

I still think it's an aerodynamic phneomenon produced in the inlet-duct. It appears only at high RPM when the airspeed into the engine is very high. I assume it's caused by a valve changing position during shifting to match the lower RPM and therefore the air is forced through a smaller diameter causing some "flute-like" effect...

bigblock is correct - it happens in certain hi rev shift situations. not sure what the fuss is as the sound is fine - now if it happened all the time, even low, that may get a little much....

Does it happen on downshifts? Hi rpm and low rpm upshifts? Low speed upshifts after first gear?

If it happens in high rpms up shifts, it is normal. Do not worry.
If it happens in other situations as well, then make an appointment with service.

I've driven four 458 Speciales, and all four of them did it at high rpm shifts. And I've driven three 458 Italias, and likewise, all three of them did it at high rpm shifts.

Now that my memory is starting to go; my wife will probably sell the Speciale for a yugo, and I'll still think I'm having fun!

Every 458 that I have driven makes that noise during upshifts with large throttle application and high RPM. It is just the nature of the beast, I would not worry about it. I think that the 488 does it as well, I will check next test drive.

Maybe what we're seeing here is not a difference in cars but a difference in drivers.

Personally, I don't wring my car out to 8-9K rpm in most gears because acceleration will suffer. The goal of shifting any car is to shift at an engine speed that will drop the rpms right onto the peak of the torque curve, which on a 458 is around 6000-6500 rpm. The DCT shifts so fast that in the lower gears you'll only lose 1000-1500 revs so shifting around 7000-7500 is best for me in most cases. 5th, 6th and 7th is another story as wind resistance starts to rob a bunch of power and the revs will drop accordingly requiring shifting at a higher rpm in order to still fall on the torque peak.

Is it just the owners who take it to 8-9K in the lower gears who hear the sound?

You could be right. Its why i didnt get on with the 488 or the mclaren. I like the f1 scream. Going to be fitting ipe f1 exhaust when i get it back to get even more scream, less bothered about speed more about how it makes me feel, so more torque, torque curves or less torque doesnt really affect me....but i do find the screech between gears annoying....

So I now have my car back and it still does this, in race, sport and comfort. Love it so much though I'm going got live with it as I guess so many of you do. Thing is any other car co would call it a fault and recall it, Ferrari call it a feature or character of the car, And the other thing is neither the F12, ff or cali t make the screech noise, so why does the 458/488 ?.........

Any kind of squeaks, squeals or rattles would drive me nuts. It would diminish the overall enjoyment. Period. I hope your brakes don't squeal too. Do they? "Brake squeal" is another one of those topics that crop up periodically with some saying the brakes squeal all the time, other have no brake squeal and some squeal "sometimes". I guess I'm just lucky in that none of my Ferraris have ever had any squeaks, squeals or rattles. I wish you did not have to "live with it".

Hi, my car does exactly the same thing. I mentioned it to the dealer and they said it is normal.

If I lift my foot of the gas between flicking the paddles it does not make the noise but if I have my floor flat on the gas and do not lift and I am up in the rev range when I change gear it make the noise. It's a characteristic of the car unfortunately.

I sold my old Speciale for this reason as well. Dealer said it's a common and fairly difficult to fix problem. When we pushed the issue up the Ferrari HQ, they said it's "normal." That really took away from the enjoyment of the car for me. I can confirm the Pista shifts much harder and definitely doesn't have the issue. The exhaust is quieter so it would be easy to hear it if it happened.

If I ever got back into a Speciale, I'd really need to drive it hard on a warm/hot day to verify it doesn't squeak.
