They really make the best videos. I think my personal favorite is Phil Hill Jr racing a 250 GTO and really pushing it. If I were the owner, I'd probably hire him to drive me around as I wouldn't have the stones to push it 10/10ths

Beautiful car. I love the video.

When DK restored it a few years ago and removed the roof installed by Vignale, what did they do to the body? Is it a complete re-body or does it have any original part?

    Best,

A few years ago? No, that was almost 18 years ago.
    Roof removed? No. See below.
In 1954 Chassis 0196 A was rebodied with a one-off Vignale Coupé body, painted red with a black top (this Coupé body had previously been installed on Mike Sparken’s 1952 Aston Martin DB3). In 1999 David Cottingham’s DK Engineering, England completely rebodied back chassis 0196 A into original Vignale Spider configuration with a totally new body built in England, former Vignale Coupé body was removed (kept by Cottingham and installed on Ferrari 212 Inter Chassis #0205 EL).
See also my book "Ferrari by Vignale", published 1993 by Giorgio Nada Editore in Milan. Pages 125/126.

I don't agree. If you carefully look old pics, you will see there were two Vignale coupé bodies : one on the Aston Martin, the other on the Ferrari...

Thank you very much Marcel. Now it´s very clear. I have seen 0205 EL with that body at the Tour Auto 2014.

    Thanks,

    Nicolás.

You are absolutely right, Cyril. There were two such Vignale Coupe bodies.

    Indeed 2 body histories.
Regarding the DB3: Quote: "It was then sold to French driver Michel Poberejsky who ran under 'Myke Sparken' name (note : Myke, not Mike).
He had a gorgeous body made by Vignale. A DB3S engine powered this 'berlinetta' which was registrered 4375 CK 75 (in Paris).
Sparken raced at Casablanca with Salvadori in 1953, at Agadir and Dakar in 1954.
Sparken began racing with Ferraris and DB3/3 was sold to Mr Cerretti then Mr Boris (an helicopter maker) who kept on racing.
In 1956, DB3/3 appeared at Montlhéry with new owner Mr Prodiaz.
It is supposed to have been involved in a road accident later in the Bois de Boulogne and to have been scrapped (the engine being sold) because it was thought to be unrepairable." Unquote

In 1955 0196A with Vignale body was spotted and photographed at the Palm Springs races of 26/27 March.

I wonder if it still has the Mercedes 300SL gearbox installed by Hal Ulrich in the late 1950s?

When restord by DK Engineering (finished 2001) a 340 MM gearbox was installed instead of the original 5-speed transmission, awkward to use with little synchromesh, which was found not suitable for regular use.

Not claiming any knowledge of the ownership chain. Nor am i making any claims relative the bodies 0196 A wore, but I did find these while researching 0202 A.

As I understand the history, 0196 A was owned by a Mr. Lee Sturtevant of Chicago Illinois during the early 1960's. Thus the advertisements.

When Lee visited the Ferrari factory in the early 1950s, he found them without modern torque wrenches. They just tightened nuts to what "felt good". He returned to Chicago and sent them a box full of his torque wrenches. As a result, he was always a welcome visitor at the factory over the years. He also had a Dodge Power Wagon equipped with a supercharged Chrysler 392 Hemi, that was used as a "tow car" for his tool display trailers.
