Good evening all. Currently doing my annual fluid flush, and would like to switch to Zerex G-05 on the refill. I've searched high and low, and still unsure of the correct answer to my question. I have the coolant system drained, but also realize there must be residual conventional Green coolant left in some low points/heater cores/etc.

Can I just refill the system w/ G-05, or do I have to additionally flush the circuit prior. I've read everything from "precipitates may form", to "backwards compatible w/ conv green".

The car is on jack stands in the garage, and would prefer to avoid running water in there if not necessary....

Anybody have actual experience with the switchover they would like to share- thanks!!

If you flush enough clean water through, I think be Ok. Why not use conventional green? I have seen it sit in motors not used for years and still looks clean.

I would probably back flush the radiator and heater core while you're doing the job then flush with distilled water. It's super cheap.

It is HOAT formulation instead of OAT so it is safe to combine.

Have done it hundreds of times.

G-05 (HOAT technology) is what you want for best performance with aluminum, wet cylinder liners, etc. A good flush/rinse with distilled water is all that you should need - unless OAT (Dex-Cool) was previously used. Unlikely. Small amounts of standard old IAT antifreeze residual is not regarded as a problem.

IAT - inorganic acid technology . Traditional antifreeze. Still used with brass/copper cooling system components. Not an extended life coolant and needs to be changed frequently.
OAT - organic acid technology. Dex-Cool. Compatibility issues with IAT and air! Extended life.
HOAT - hybrid organic acid technology. Common European coolant used for years by Mercedes and others. Low silicate content compatible with Ferrari. Recommended by many, with no known issues. Extended life.

There are a number of other formulations out there; however, these are the traditional/common types available.

I have converted my Astons (formerly OAT), the 550 (who knows?) and the Cobra (IAT) to G-05. The Pantera is still using IAT.

In any case, high value cars should be replacing anti-freeze every 2-3 years to prevent issues that result from failure of the additive packages.

No doubt, other opinions may vary... :)

And, it is great stuff --- the only coolant I use in all my aluminum / steel / brass mix system cars.

I just bought a Coolant Refill/Air Purge Tool (ES#: 2712734) from ECS Tuning for $76.95 which uses compressed air to draw a vacuum in the entire cooling system and evacuates any remaining antifreeze from the system. Then it sucks the new antifreeze mixture into (supposedly) every nook and cranny.

It's from Schwaben and very high quality. Haven't used it yet, but I have 3 cars to do and I anticipate it will come in handy. I plan on draining the systems, flushing them with distilled water, then introducing a 50/50 mix of G-05 and distilled water back in.

Did I mention that you should use distilled water?

Conventional green was never the best choice for engines with aluminum. It was OK when Detroit made all cast iron engines. You will notice since the domestic OEMs are making engines with aluminum heads and/or block they have switched over to G-05 (Ford and Chrysler)

Thanks gentlemen. I'm familiar with the process- I was just wondering about the real world compatibility of the 2 products from those that had made the switch. I now have the answer I sought- thanks!
