Drove 100 miles today... love the new wheels and wider rubber, and taking curves and ramps at 2x the posted speed!
I know it... I *prefer* the factory wheel look too, but this is by far the nicest (to my eyes) 17" current production monoblock wheels that are at least somewhat factory-ish style in appearance. Specs that I ended up with are 17 x8.0 ET 18 fronts 17 x9.0 ET 9 rears This made the fender well fit essentially visually identical to my factory front wheels with the upsized tires, and my rears with upsized tires and the 5/8" spacers -- exactly as I had wanted. Tires are Bridgestone Potenzas RE-71R 235/45/17 and 255/40/17 On my 100-mile drive yesterday, handling was superb. Sweet at high speeds, and there were *no* issues at slow speed street driving nor during slow speed tight turns such as negotiating parking places either, despite the wider fronts. If you're interested in a set, call Wheels Boutique at 786 249 0127 and specifically talk to David Nussbaum on extension 2109. You can tell him that I referred you and ask for a Ferrari Club discount. HRE didn't have all the bugs worked out for the 308s, at least with the offsets that I wanted, so I guess I was a bit of a test case... but that's ok, since after all, it was only recently that the value of these cars has gotten up to the point where it's more easily justifiable to buy a set of high-end custom wheels for them. David now also knows the proper length bolts so that they can supply them for the 308/328 cars... HRE got them wrong the first time. They're also now providing bezels for the OEM Ferrari replacement center caps p/n 226425. David is the right guy to call to make sure you get what you're supposed to for your car.
I like my original 17" HRE 505's - 17" is as large as I'd ever go - at times I think 16" might look better but... BTW - Love the gold coffin spokes... Image Unavailable, Please Login
First time I've seen them in 17in. with custom widths and offsets, so they will fit over my brakes and I can sustain my tire fetish
From Image for the Billett 81 Thank you for your email. The price would be as follows. 7x17 = £400.00 x 2 = £800.00 8x17 = £420.00 x 2 = £840.00 Carriage via T.N.T = £350.00 Total = £1990.00 = $2487.50 at the current approx. 1.25 exchange rate Current delivery time 7-8 weeks not counting the Christmas/new year holidays so would be mid-end of January. Regards Harry. Not too bad....
Had the 308 out enjoying the nice weather... I still really like these wider 17" HREs and the better handling the combination gives me! Very happy with the purchase. Image Unavailable, Please Login
My car is now featured on the HRE site: Ferrari 308 with HRE Vintage 505M in Satin Silver | HRE Performance Wheels
I just bought some SSR forged 17x8 wheels from a BMW M3 owner. They are silver but I may Plastidip them anthracite grey and satin gloss on top. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thanks. Wish I could take credit, but they came with the car. I did add the cavallino to the center caps.
Well due to a 288 project I have been immersed in for the last 6 months, I have learned a lot about 3 piece Speedline Mistral wheels (SL703). These are apparently the bee's knees when it comes to bolt on 70s/80s custom 3 piece wheels for F cars. Not sure which cars they were offered on, but I have seen them on a Testarossa as well as a Mondial, and they are the wheel of choice for 288 clones, for those not willing to fork out $15K for a set of splined wheels and another chunk to convert their hubs to splined hubs. Apparently they were offered on the early 348 Challenge cars as well, then they went to a later design the SL978 which does not use center caps. The 288 and the F40 (SL364) had similar-looking wheels but they were splined. For some reason I don't see them on 308s, but they sure are F correct and period correct wheels. Perhaps because they are not exactly easy to come by. The main advantage here, apart from light weight and general sexy appearance, is you can change the backspace and frontspace, and the widths, merely by putting new tubs on the hubs. Well you have to undo about 40 bolts to do it. Due to various exigencies (how about that!), I ended up with a set of 17-14 and 17-9 Mistrals complete with unobtanium Ferrari center hubcaps and the tool used to remove said hubcaps. These are F40 size wheels and will not go on a 308 without wider fenders at the rear. But for anyone wanting to push the limits of "fatness" this may be the ticket.
They sound nice! Post a picture or it doesn't exist! I think they're even too wide for a Michelotto project.
Well here's the photo the "gentleman" who sold us the car used to (mis)represent that the wheels would fit on the car, along with the photo of Norwood's guys trying to duplicate what the seller represented showing the same wheel protruding 2 1/2" inches from the same bodywork on the same car. Bob stated the backspace was about right (just cleared the wheelhouses) but as the photo shows protruding about 2 1/2". There are two things going on here. First, the 288 body is wider than a regular 308, by about 4". So that would help, you would think. Second, this car came to us with a 355 subframe in lieu of the 308 chassis. The 355 track is wider than the 308, so that pushes the wheels out. But even without the 355 subframe, this wheel will not fit this 288 body as the wheels would interfere with the wheelhouses when flush with the bodywork (ie you cannot suck the wheels in sufficiently under the car). So I don't think there is any way these particular wheels will fit on a 308 even with 288 fenders, unless you run the car without wheelhouses and even then you may run into other interference issues. Bottom line, the only place they may work is on an F40 or clone thereof. (The F40 uses a 13" rear). And even then, there is a complication: even though the wheels are badged Ferrari, they are 5x120 bolt pattern. We actually made custom adapters for the 9" fronts to go on the 5x108 hubs (there is plenty of room due to the wider bodywork), but when the backs would not fit we gave up and went to another wheel entirely (third photo), a later Speedline wheel, but 18"x 8" and 10" off a 348. They fit perfectly at the rear, but also required a spacer at the front to bring the wheel out flush with the bodywork (fourth photo).
