As others have pointed out, I have accepted the occasional check engine light as part of life with a Ferrari. Clear the code with my scanner and good to go for a while. But lately I am getting a P0430 Catalyst System Efficiency Threshold code popping up about every other time I take her out for a drive. The code clears without issue then comes back at some point. I have not been able to find a pattern for when it appears - sometimes during hard driving and other times just cruising.

More or less a nuisance since it clears, but does anyone have a suggestion on what I might check to keep it from becoming a bigger issue and popping up all the time?

    Thanks!

I guess I should also mention that I have the stock Ferrari exhaust on the car...

Do you have stock headers and stock cats?

From memory the catalyst codes (0420 and 0430) are side specific, so that should narrow it down. A header or cat or O2 sensor could be failing. O2 spacers might cure the CEL but wont address the actual problem.

In my experience, if everything is stock: Either the catalytic converter is going out, the rear o2 sensor is, or possibly an exhaust leak.

We can disable this code from turning on reprogramming the ecus.

Shoot me a PM if you have any further questions. Happy to help.

I wouldn't call that normal. I have had my car for over 10 years and I have only had a couple of codes. I never had a code that wasn't a real issue of some sort. I don't agree with those that say 'just clear the code' or 'turn the power off' and they treat It like 'the solution' to a problem. Ignoring the warning signs is like ignoring the warning signs that you are having a heart attack. They can't possibly mean anything; ignore them, it will be just fine.

Sorry that is a little off topic

When Front and rear sensor readings mirror each other it'll assume the cat is doing very little. Could be myriad things, air leak, duff sensor ad infinitum. What are the the STFT's reading?

Yes a more complete scan will tell you. Also look at real time O2 sensor readout to see what is actually happening. Most of the tie it is a bad O2 sensor. If you have modified cats or exhaust, sometime the sensor is TOO sensitive. A spacer would help here if everything else checked out. Especially Fuel trim, no misfires and a good cat.

As stated above, ignoring a CEL and just clearing it probably caused the P0420. There is a saying " catalytic converters are murdered, they don't commit suicide". Something caused the 0420 code, whether it is a fuel, ignition, or a mechanical issue. Check your rear O2 sensor signal. If it is switching rich/lean than your Converter is bad . The rear O2 sensor should be flat-lined at roughly 600mv or slightly rich. Snap throttle the engine, if the O2 sensor voltage moves, that's a good indication the O2 sensor is good. The O2 sensor data is available on a Generic (Global) ODDII Scantool along with other required Data. Engine data 11 is passenger side and Engine Data drivers side is 14 since there are two ECM's. Also look at Long/Short Fuel trims, Long Term should be +/- roughly 5% and Short Term should be cycling +/- 3% when in Closed Loop control.
The Catalytic Converter code is popping at random times because it is a non-continuous monitor which means certain enabling criteria must be met before the monitor is run. Also it is a two trip monitor which means it must run twice to completion before a CEL is set.
My suggestion, buy a good used set of OEM manifolds/converters and keep your engine properly maintained with an eye on Fuel Trims. Don't just clear the CEL's, your Ferrari was trying to warn you.

Great and detailed post; and only number 20, impressive. Welcome to the board.
