Least favorite F car from the 70s & 80s

I think its pretty well established in the US Ferrari Hierarchy that in the 1970's its the 308GT4 and in the 80's its the Mondial coupe, that are the least favored.

that's like saying which brand of Pistachio ice cream you don't like... as its all good!!!

In the USA the 400 - is hard to cite, as was not actually sold here and had to be Gray Market imported... so that leads to a lot of bad examples being over here.

 

I am almost certain that I will be the ONLY person to say this.

My least favorite care from that era (if you count 1987 into the early 1990's?)

The F40.

Sure, from a driving/driver's standpoint - it is one of the best EVER.

Why do I hate it? Look at how beautiful the 288 gto is. Go from THAT to what in my eyes (neglect the advanced materials & advancements) looks pretty much like a crappily put (glued - you CAN see the glue!) together kit car with a big ass hoop wing stuck on the back. Seriously! If Ferrari hadn't been the one to put it out? People would have laughed at the looks/construction quality - at least as far as the body goes.

 

Frankly mid-'70s to mid-90s were not good years for anybody. There are a few cars that stand out; but not many, including Ferrari.

Also, if you're interested in buying a Ferrari from this era (which is pretty much the Fiat years), keep in mind Ferrari did not start using galvanized steel until, I believe, the mid-'80s. I don't care how cool a car might be, if it has been bitten by the rust worm, you are looking at spending a LOT of money.

 

400/412 for sure.

If this was a list that included the 2000's, the designer mess that is the 430 would be on top of my list. That face and that rear... Ugh!

 

GT4 prices have gone wild over the past few years so I don't think it's a contender for "least favored". Mondial owners realize what bargains they have and I think are quite happy for them to remain out of favour; similar for 400 -bargain luxury 12 cylinder (except for the unlovable auto)

OK do any of you have (or know of ) a 400,410, or 412 project for sale? Since it is polling as one of the least loved it should be cheap to buy. Engine condition not important the rest is.

Beautifully said, Kim. I'm a big fan of the Ferrari cars from that era and quite like the 400 and GT4. Haven't been as big of a fan of the Mondial but they're definitely growing on me, and in any case they are certainly more desirable than most other cars made in that era.

Nice to see the love for the X1/9 in this thread. It's an under-appreciated classic. I still have a couple, in fact... but one really needs to go to create some space in the shop.

Don't forget, though - the Mustang II was built on a Pinto platform...

No, ive never liked the looks of the F40 either.
in a similar vein, tbh, I never cared for the Daytona either....it has the opposite problem for me...very bland.

But they wouldn't be my "least favorite" from this generation...mondial would be.
The 2 above would be my "most over-rated".

Approaching blasphemy to say so but.... yeah. Especially the rear end. That's the best they could come up with? I love the lines from the front end sweeping to the A pillar, but by the time you get to the C pillar, it's like they ran out of ideas.







( That said, I am still willing to adopt one if anyone out there has one that needs a good home...

 

If you don't like the question don't answer it. If that's something he's actually concerned about let him ask and I think it's a valid question. Whether he owns a Ferrari or not is irrelevant, there are plenty here who don't own Ferraris, do you tell them to pound sand too? Not to mention the guy is Rossa subscribed so he financially supports this place.

Ferraris are very special cars (maybe the most special) but that doesn't mean every one of them is stellar. And even if they were all stellar, there's always a less stellar one.

For me personally, it's the 400 series and the Mondial, although I wouldn't mind owning either one. For the 400, I just don't like the 80s styling and for the Mondial, I don't like the stretched look.

Funny enough, like a few previous posters mentioned, I'm not really a fan of the Daytona either, especially when compared to its predecessors.

 

The least liked or loved translates to least desirable. Desirability is a factor in collector car pricing. The less desirable a car is the lower the price buyers are willing to pay. This doesn't mean the car is a dog. It's purely economics. If you have a choice between two cars that are going to need a cash infusion to fix problems or to take care of deferred maintenance. Which one would you choose, the one that you are absolutely sure you will recoup your money or the one which you know you will not recover your money or a small percentage. Clear example would be a Porsche 911 vs a 928.
Cars are my hobby but I have to be very careful with my expenditures. One reason why I will not buy from a dealer vis a vis Gullwing. Although he did buy one my cars last year.

 

The rear end of the Daytona was so terrible that they recycled it for the 456. ~wink~

I guess the 400 is probably the Ferrari I least like but I actually like all of them. A bit of fan as such I guess. Yes a 400 is the least likely Ferrari I would own.
