1995 Was the last year for OBDI

    OBII is 96 and up

Your car might need to be running. And, you also need to check if the OBDII recall was completed - contact any dealer and provide your VIN - they will tell you of any open recalls

This is just another issue that has us bald guys trying to tear our hair out. I was on a rally a couple of months ago when I got a CEL while driving very 'safe & sane'. It didn't worry me, so I drove another 10 minutes before finding a comfortable place to pull off and shut the car down. I waited a couple of minutes before restarting, but the CEL was still illuminated; I drove to the lunch break with it on.

We had a couple of chase cars, and one of them had a very generic looking scanner. He pulled three codes which I copied; then he reset the light, and I haven't seen it again. My mech. said he would like to see the car, and he will sometime this winter.

I'm sure we have all seen various warning lights on these cars. My question is: Is there some 'inexpensive' scanner that we can carry that will allow us to decide that we can drive home without the car blowing up? (My car is a '96 w. 5.2.)

Yes, any generic code reader and the list of codes. You would then need to determine how serious the issue.

I keep my scan tool in my car for just this reason. :)

    Dave,

Any links to a reasonably priced quality scan tool? And list of codes?

    Buddy,

    I have this one:

    https://actron.com/content/obd-ii-pocketscan

Not sure how it compares to others but it seems to do the trick.

I also have the Kiwi WIFI tool but still have not tried it :(

See attached code list. This is from an SD2 list for the 360 - many are the same.

Get a wifi OBD device and dash command for your phone or tablet.

It allows to log and create graphs of outputs that can be useful in trouble shooting besides the basic codes, clearing, etc.

I also have a basic actron from pep boys for quick look see

    HI Dave,

Tried the OBD II reader with the car running and get the same result. Will call the dealer to determine if the OBD II Recall was performed.

Earlier in the thread, it was mentioned an adapter may be needed. Any idea what that is?

I think the logical progression is to Confirm the recall was performed first. Then worry about connecting the OBD II.

Thanks Dave. I called a dealer in Florida (Ferrari Ft. Lauderdale) and they would not give that information out over the phone so reached out to Ferrari NA, and had to leave a message. Will let you know.

Bob - email me your VIN and I'll get it for you.

No secrets to open recalls. I don't understand why they would not give it to you but I can get it.

Bob - I sent you an email. No open recalls on the VIN you sent me. :)

    Try a different scanner.

You can tell if the recall was done by looking up at the OBD port from below. It was a simple splicing of another ground to a pin accomplished with a crimpable splice that is visible.

Look at the last image in the recall bulletin for a pic of the completed splice. If you see that splice as in the pic, it has been done.

    http://lists.ferrarilist.com/pipermail/ferrari/pdf00000.pdf

When I got my car , 1997, the OBD did not work and the recall had been done. The problem was a pin on the 9 pin plug in the ECU bay behind the passenger seat had been bent over when the major was done. Here is a link to the thread I did on that issue.

    http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/144367053-post12.html

There are only two signal wires from the ECU to the OBD port, a 12V line and a ground. It is fairly easy to troubleshoot if the recall was done.

This is great. Thanks. I am getting the reader in a few days and try again. The one I had was a cheap one form autozone, not an Alctron.

Got it, Thanks Dave. I even received a call back from Ferrari NA. The confirmed completed in Texas on the 10th. They also said that the Ferrari dealer (remain nameless) in Florida should have answered my question. He was going to investigate. I told him to not stir the pot, but he insisted it is the dealers job to answer recall questions.

    Thanks again,

    Boaf

    All,

    Quick update:

Was able to get my cheap ODB II reader to work. The connection plug was a bit loos so held it in place for the full Read cycle and it cam back with 0 codes. I sent a re-set anyway.

The reason for wanting to check and clear codes is because my suspension light is on and I know that the servos were replaced and working. Maybe it's just a bad lamp connection.

Bringing it back Saturday to the place I purchased it from to re-set an airbag light that came on. When I turn on my parking lights, the suspension light (yellow) the parking lights (green) and the airbag (red) reminds me of a holiday tree. Thanks for all the help.

If you start the car without moving it 3 times the suspension light with stay illuminated. Just go drive it and it will clear itself.

did you turn off your immobilizer first? i found that if you don't turn it off first an OBD@2 reader will throw an error. i know i'm answering a 4 year oldpost but hopefully it will help the next guy

Hello guys thanks for all the information, I purchased the obd2 to 3 pin connector plugged in my generic scan tool and was able to turn off my engine light hasn’t come on again done 300km , for reference I have an Australian delivered non obd2 vehicle. The plug needed is the Alfa plug and you need to power it from the cigarette light , purchased that from eBay as well total cost is $20 AUD
p.s you must press the immobiliser first otherwise you get the error message
