I think that's what SM said not so long ago.
2019 seems to be an optimistic deadline, but eventually they will go there.

And while it seems pretty obvious that the NA v12 will be paired with a battery at some point, I'm really curious to see what they will do with their V8. I'm hoping they'll get rid of the turbo, bring back the screaming high rpm engine and slap a battery to bring some big numbers

agreed, I hope they don't make it like a p1 and have it be twin turbo with a battery.

 

the problem right now is getting the performance to the ground. The 488 is already boost by gear. The car limits power intentially so you don't blow the wheels off at 90mph.

I don't think a NA hybrid v8 would be that big of a performance upgrade from a marketing perspective. An all new car that's not much faster than the 488? The 458 was leaps and bounds ahead of the 430.

I think RWD is about at its limits with current tire technology

Next Ferrari might be a NA v8 hybrid. But it will likely have those motors at the front wheels

 

Actually the 488 manages its torque in lower gears in order to give the sensation of a NA engine with the power building up in parallel with the revs.
RWD is still in rude health. There is a nearly 1000 HP LaFerrari on sale (so to speak), lest we forget!

My own speculation is the turbo is a stop-gap measure until they can go hybrid. And it will be hybrid for V8 and V12. Then we will have the NA sound and fury with the hybrid adding power and helping out in various ways.

 

I completely agree this is the direction. We may look back and frown on the 488. (I have one on order though).

 

NA Hybrid is very expensive, because the body and chassis will need exotic material to reduce the weight. Turbo is the cheapest and easiest option. If 488 is selling well with the turbo, Ferrari will want to hold on forever like this. You can easily add from 700hp - 1000hp with little tweaks, no engine R&D investment needed. Adding 50-100hp (hardcore version or successor) can be done with just software update.

 

Exotic materials? Are they getting them from the amazon? lol. As technology progresses things get cheaper. I believe Ferrari will def go the hybrid route and its already been mentioned by them that they plan to.
