    Dear All,

what is the exact procedure for removal of the exhaust headers on a fuel injected 400i?

I would like to have the headers ceramic coated and need to remove them therefor.

Do I need to remove the complete injection system on each side of the engine or is there enough space if I just remove the air filter box but leave the rest in?

I would be very greatfull if someone could offer advice on the different steps for the removal. Thanks a lot.

No, you do not need t remove the injection system be cause you are going to remove the exhaust manifold from beneath the car. Remove the exhaust pipes bolts at the collector, and tie the pipes up in situ. then you can start to remove and loosen the header bolts. Just loosen them until you have them all loose on each given section(3 per side). These are heavy pieces, and you don't want the falling and breaking your nose and teeth. Straight forward. really,. Just remember to install the in reverse order. Also a little WD40 wouldn't hurt as you do not want to snap one of the bolts off. New gaskets wouldn't hurt at this time. I hope that this is of some use to someone. Thank you. Jq.

    Hello Jacques,

thanks for the fast reply. I guess rhe heat shield stays in that way. I will face it within the next weeks and for sure will use some WD40 upfront.

    Thanks

The heat shields can come off without removing the injection systems. They are bolted to the headers themselves.

Definitely new gaskets and nuts. The nuts aren't in tight. I coated my headers a few years ago.

Done it today. Really was easy as you said with air filter boxes removed I could
get at some bolts from above, some from below. Thanks a lot for your recommendations!

What color coating would appear "correct" for our cars? Who is the best to do this work?

I am thinking of having it plasma ceramic coated in black. Adresses I do only have in Germany. Sorry.

Mine on my 400i are a metallic white and original just like a set of 365 boxer headers I have kicking around in my basement. I think black is incorrect.

Who sells the best quality header gasket? Also, what size are the header nuts and bolts, and what is the size of the bolt that fastens the the heat shield to the headers. Thank you all very much. Jq.

I found when re-assembling mine that there were flat copper gaskets and 'puffy' copper gaskets that look to have better sealing. Awitalian.com had them in stock. Check dimensions when you remove them
    400 engines use these
    exhaust gasket 147630 (4)
    exhaust gasket 147631 (4)

Not sure about the bolts & nuts. I did apply a high-temp heat shield to the inside of the heat shields and combined with the ceramic coat headers it has noticeably reduced interior footwell temps.

Do I even need to remove the air boxes to get the headers off?

How tight do you go with the new nuts?
