Hello Julian, I bought four 20 cm long bolts and nuts, something between nut and spring pan, to have nuts in better position for turning. Then changed four bolts one by one, removed two bolts, and lowered spring pan down. It takes some time, but is safe method, as long you take care that only nuts turn, and bolts are tight. You can use threaded rods too, with double nuts as bolt head. There are six bolts, but I used only four. Juha
Here is one photo with same method: Refurbishment of my Maserati Mexico - Page 12 - Classic Cars and Yesterday's Heroes - PistonHeads Juha
This looks excellent but did your bolts go through the lower spring pan or are they like mine, just threaded and held in with the short bolts? Image Unavailable, Please Login
Bolts do not go trough, if you look Mexico photos, lower arm is similar, I bought bolts to get straight factory cut, they are also stronger than cheapest threaded bar, I checked, my bolts are only 15 cm long, but I dismantled front suspension about 9 years ago... Juha
Hi Chaps I thought you might like to know of some bargain Ghibli tyres 215/70VR15 PIRELLI CN12 (Vintage Car use only) | Longstone Tyres
I am replacing the leather on the Ghibli since whomever did the interior last time could have done a better job. Plus with a black exterior a contrasting color for the interior would look better. Of course my wife gave me the "why are you taking a perfectly good interior apart" dirty look .... I was pleasantly surprised as to how straight forward everything came apart. It took me about 4 hours to do. This included taking the time to photograph everything, make notes and reconnecting some things so that the car is still usable. That looks awesome Ivan! Does anyone out there know how to remove the Ghibli lower front wishbone? Does the shaft it rotates on come out after removing that small cross head grub screw? Image Unavailable, Please Login
Yeah, that looks quite usable?????????? Go with senape. I'm just no fan of black interiors unless there's a lot of wood as well. That color in your Bora would be nice but probably it wasn't available for that car at the time?
Hi Julian.. Yes, after removing the set screws (cross head grub screw ?) in the lower a-arm, the pivot rods can come out.. Will they easily, that's the real question. Many have different methods of removing them. In the end, I ended up having to drill out the set screws. I also tried using the pivot rod nuts and lots of washers to turn the pivot rods out, but all I did was strip the nuts. In the end I sacrificed the pivot rods by spraying lubricant where the rods enter the a-arm frame and hitting them back and forth with a hammer and continuing to spray lubricant until they came out. Took quite some time, as I proceeded very carefully. Hope yours come out easily.. Attached is a picture of the front suspension and some other pieces ready to go back on my car... The new pivot rods are in the white envelope/bag.. Mike Image Unavailable, Please Login
Well .... I should have been a bit more specific By usable I meant that the car can be started and driven on to the trailer as I will need to transport the Ghibli to the upholstery shop. For example, if the AMP meter is disconnected the car will not start as all the "switched" current runs through this gauge. As you know Maserati left many accessories "live" even when the ignition is off so one must be careful that no live wires can short out. I'll be using PAC 1386 Marrone for the interior, same color Frank is using on his Vignale spyder. It should look really nice with the black exterior. BTW: I plan to attend this year's Concorso Italiano with the Ghibli as they will be celebrating the 50th anniversary. Any other Ghibli owners going? Ivan
My Espada is similarly disabled now due to a brake failure while waiting for my seats to be rebuilt. Hopefully my boosters haven't rotted as well. They were rebuilt a while back. To be fair both the clutch and brake masters were original. Probably due to just how friggin' difficult they are to replace. That amp meter is "interesting" I guess a few fires have been started that way. That color will look much better IMHO. Richer and sexier. I like red in black cars too.
Ivan , glad to hear you are planning to attend Concourso Italiano this year. I also plan to attend but I am not sure I will have my Ghibli ready to run by then. I had not seen that They will honor the 50 th anniversary of the Ghibli. Hope that will bring a few more out. We had a very poor turnout of vintage cars last year so we need all the help we can get.
Today I received this reminder from Concorso and noticed that the Ghibli anniversary is mentioned. We need to have a good showing of Ghiblis. Ivan Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hi, Can anyone tell me what to undo to allow the front stub axle assembly to be separated. The part is off the car and all 3 visible nuts on the back of the assembly are now loosened but I can't see how the disc and stub axle comes off the upright. I have the 52mm knock off hubs Thanks for any help!! Julian Image Unavailable, Please Login
When I removed the caliber I get access to all these bolts!! But does this allow the disc to slide out? Image Unavailable, Please Login
There is no short cut regarding the brake discs. Unscrew the center nut first, which hold the bearings. leave the axle in place, please. Best, Marek
Thanks Marek, The stub axle is off and the knock off centre comes off easily enough. The car is being prepared for paint so I may as well rebush and Powdercoat all the suspension when it's off the car Julian Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hello Ivan, Have you got maybe any pics of the rigid brake tubings that are under the dashboard on the left side pillar ? (the one that come from and to the master cylinder - and how they pass to the engine compartment and attach to the booster...) Thx.
