Even if everything happened as per the Grand Tour video, the results would still be invalid because he drifted the P1 around 2 corners.
And the time of the One:1 at Spa isn't very good. P1s have ran 2:30 on Corsas with non-pro drivers. LTs have ran 2:36 with non-pros. The Aston Martin Vulcan ran 2:20 on Cup 2s. I'm sorry but you will never convince me that the One:1 handles well. Read the thread and stop bringing up already dismissed points. The Harris tyre test laps were ran on two separate days. The Cup 2 laps were ran during the Best Drivers car 2014 review and the Trofeo R laps the following morning. 1. Chris Harris's times differed by 2s in the 918 on different days too, even with the same tyres. 2. MT's time at Laguna with the ACR on different days differed by 3s, with same tyres. 3. The time on Cup 2s for the GT3 was simply crap. 4s behind 458S, it's never been more than 2s behind anywhere else, even on Hockenheim GP. 4. Sponsored by Pirelli. 5. Cup 2s were used as they came, Pirelli inflated the Trofeos personally. 6. Cup 2s 1.2s/minute fatser than Cup+ in same day test. Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 Launched - Tyre Reviews 7. Trofeos only 0.4s/minute faster than Cup+. And Trofeos are faster than Corsas. 8. Trofeo R 0.9s/minute faster than Corsas at Portimao on P1, same day test. Hence Trofeo Rs are not 1s/minute faster than Cup 2s or anything like it. 9. The 918's Cup 2s are bespoke and not even the same as those on the GT3. See Andreas Preuninger interview. A guided tour of the 2015 Porsche 911 GT3 RS ? by the boss by CAR Magazine So in short, a billion reasons why they test is both irrelevant and misleading. Grand Tour - Making a TV show does not stop them releasing unedited footage online to subscribers separately.
Just like to inject realism into the proceedings. Lots of bad tests come out. If we take Salomondrin's times at Thermal Long, even customers have ran 2:08 in P1s. And BTW, Graham Rahal may be going to Thermal in a 675LT to make a mockery of Salomondrin's tests.
You are trying to rationalise fun and that just spoils things for everyone, Top Gear takes a team of a 100 or more to film anything and to make great tv they don't always do things sequentially. You are assuming they drifted as part of the hot lap? Either they did and that suggests chassis flaws or they didn't because, its just a bloody tv show........
Watch the steering at 1:05:57 and 1:06:27, they were very deliberate drifts, not chassis flaws and didn't occur on the Harris video. And you're assuming the hot lap was conducted from a standing start just because they showed one. Either it happened as shown or it didn't, you can't have it both ways. Besides, following the AMG GT R's 7:10 lap on the Nordschleife it seems there's been a complete death of integrity in car testing anyway.
Not in 130 degree weather they didn't. Also, yay, you can regurgitate info you saw on maclife, good for you! I've done a lot of car business with Rahal. Met Graham, really nice guy. He'd think you're a real piece of work I'm sure. And BTW Alec Udell, the driver from banging gears, may be young but he's extremely talented. He certainly can exploit a 918 or P1 enough for a legit test with some practice. Maybe the outcome though won't be what you want so you'll discredit him. Tell me, if Graham ran faster in a 918 would you discredit him, as well?
It other times that discredit him, plus the fact he said the test wasn't very serious anyway. Salomondrin's times are a joke. Check out 8:03 - yeah, really trying real hard there. Looks more like 8/10ths on a public road kind of driving. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwxNLhhzhUI&t=2s
More on Cup 2s. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7AtXzca-zSY So there's no way of telling how good a bespoke Cup 2 is.
Porsche could easily ask for stickier tires from Michelin or Pirelli. But those tires would be too compromised for road use, and remember these are supposed to be road cars, despite our fascination with lap times. A trofeo is just not suitable for most road situations.
You have no idea how sticky the tyres they are already using are. They are bespoke tyres, not off the shelf Cup 2s. Compromised road use is caused by lack of tread not stickiness.
Oh, the Suzuka lap where they beat a Nissan GTR by like less than 1s. Koenigsegg One:1 - A Lap At Suzuka - Koenigsegg | Koenigsegg Compare this with a customer driving the 675LT on Fuji beating the lap record by 5s... with a passenger. Fuji Speedway (post 2005) lap times - FastestLaps.com
I do know that Whoopsy has had both 918 and the GT3RS cars and the RS version cup 2 tire is stickier as it is not Eco rated tire. I tend to trust the opinion of someone who has had experience with both more than someone who surfs the Net only.
-58, can't wait! Hey Lieven, the P1 drifts because the open diff sucks as it's always been the case on every other mclaren based on the mp4-12c and on top of having had unlimited access and testing on the P3 beforehand I'm sure Harris is on mclaren's paylist as well as all other drivers featured in the few tests which showed the P3 fastest. (This should get us there quicker! )
yeah, same driver. Here is his comments 2016 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 vs. Dodge Viper ACR vs. Porsche 911 GT3 RS Why Didnt I Go Faster? I was struck by the wide gap in lap times between the Viper ACR lap record I set at Mazda Raceway with Dodge and the time I set for Motor Trend. The cars felt similar. Its not a power issue. Top speeds on the straights and acceleration curves were similar. Grip was down. I braked earlier and had a lower minimum speed in nearly every corner. I attribute the difference to the track condition. Our MT test followed a motorcycle weekend, and those skinny bike tires dont leave a nice layer of rubber the way race cars will. The track felt really green, as we say in racing. Perhaps it helps explain why the Vette Z06 felt so unruly. The Viper had that great stable balance, same as at the lap record run, and data showed good power, just less grip. I blame the track. Randy Pobst ---------------- One of the take aways from this thread and watching videos and listening to comments from the drivers who actually set these times...there is a lot more variables then just examining a "time" which could significantly alter times.
One thing is 100% sure-Lieven deserves his Christmas bonus from McLaren and at least plaquette "Employer of the year"... At least until they grow enough and hire a proper marketing department...
How can you possibly assess that on two completely different cars, especially when one is 300kg lighter and therefore has far less weight transfer in corners?
In the Harris video they managed not to drift around entire corners and we're not talking about power oversteer on the exit alone as regards the Grand Tour video.
Yup, Randy Pobst. 2nd lap was during 2016 Best Driver's Car. See 20:42. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4f4q52J9qY&t=2s So 2 laps on 2 different days doesn't prove jack.
