Ask yourself why he is mostly shunned by the other drivers. Why does he stand alone in most drivers presentations? The camera don't lie, and show that Hamilton isn't very popular among his peers.
Maybe because he has the best car on the grid, and they are a bit tired of squabbling around between themselves behind him? Seriously though i really don't know if your assumptions are correct...i will have to do a bit of digging.
As far as I can see Americans love an AMERICAN hero and winner As Bas mentioned: Lewis is very much popular because he fits in todays media culture with the mentioned "stars" producing a lot of short-living headlines as what they wore at the last red carpet. Nico is not that type of person and he would not be more in the spotlight staying or leaving F1 so this is actually no argument.
+1 Hamilton is very much in the celebrity culture - here today, gone tomorrow , this is why he feels at home in the US; they like that sort of stuff. But it's very ephemeral, superficial and not to everyone taste. Nico is just a down-to-earth sportsman who don't buy all this false glamour.
Reading how Nico's personality is being run down on this site, how he is so unpopular with so many on this site alone, and taking into account that this is only a small percentage of the grief he has had to put with, just for being himself, doing something he loves, and having the cheek to achieve his life dream (at the expense of Lewis Hamilton no less!), Nico's retirement makes more and more sense everyday!
He is a clown for some of the rediculous situations he gets himself into, that's looking at things from our normal lifestyle perspective. In his circles wearing designer clothes and hanging around with other incredibly rich people is just the norm. Like every other sportsman, his window of opportunity to set himself up for the future is very small, he seems to want to market himself above and beyond every other driver in the paddock and he's doing very well at that. Celebrity endorsements will be helping to boost his personal wealth and that doesn't appear to be at the jeopardy of his day-job performance. He's still a very quick and focused driver. Pushing himself into the public realm will indeed leave him open to ridicule, but he has to balance that with his ever growing bank balance. I would hazard a guess that his total earnings to date will be much greater than other drivers of the same age, partly due to his ontrack success and partly due to his endorsements. Only he will know if it's all been worth it in the future. Nico for example clearly has a different set of priorities, neither are right or wrong, they just look at things in a different way. You think that makes Hamilton a total dick, I think it makes him only a marginal dick, albeit a very rich and fast one.
I am sorry, but for someone who is supposed to be so "popular" in the US, I really only know of the guys I follow F1 with here in Colorado that like Lewis, the rest just cannot stand him. All think he is a very good driver, they just dislike him for the way acts outside of the car. BTW the Kartrashians are allegedly quite popular... Honestly I like his driving style and the way he fights in the car. The fake personalility, being completely devoid of any charisma while going on like he is the greatest and the team is always letting him down is what I can do without.
I'm sure a good amount of it is his personality. However, there is a popular saying among drivers which is, "nobody likes a winner". ; )
The Japanese society has zero problems with mixed race people. Regarding your comment Hamilton appealing "to people like him, marginals..." and then quickly segueing to "Hamilton would be acceptable in Brazil, the We(s)t Indies, Africa and some parts of the States perhaps?" is clearly indicative of a provincial racism (racial supremacism) on your part. Sorry, just no other way to sugar coat such patently offensive language.

Now now, I don't think anyone on fchat is racist, but sometimes it is difficult to articulate matters when they broach cultural or social differences. I didn't see anything wrong with Williams post, but then, that the point, when discussing an emotive subject such as race, creed or culture, it is extremely difficult not to upset someone, as words can be interpreted however the reader wishes....... that's why the world is full of angst and war However, it is not your place, nor mine, to judge anyone else opinions or the way they have expressed them in such a manner as to belittle them or accuse them of such serious transgressions. No? How do you explain why many Japanese finding themselves in a mixed race relationship feel ostracised and move to Europe? There are abundant examples in UK, of young Japanese staying here because their partner is not Japanese, and that would hamper their career in their country. Also, explain why people of different ethnicities are blanked out of adverts in Japan. Why an advert with that can be broadcasted in Europe or North America has to be changed before going on TV in Japan, because it contains people of non-Japanese ethnicity.
