There should be no doubt you've made the right choice regarding the paint touch up and locale to exercise this beautiful beast of a machine Tim. Well well done and very happy for you!

Thought some might be interested to see this track. 5.5 km of very technical and track set amongst olive groves, but with good run off.

It's actually incorrectly marked and the circuit is run anti clockwise.

Also, one of the workshops so I will be in more than good company.....

Talk about doing things properly. F40 LM at Ascari:). And it seems like you can take a partner and keep them entertained while you are on the track;).

Thank you. Yes, I think it should be as good as it gets so very exciting. Underground garage is packed with interesting cars both to rent and belonging to other members, Radicals being very popular.

The car is now with Topaz and I will report on the interesting one off procedure. Meanwhile, some advice please:

Before the car goes to Ascari I am thinking I should turn the rev limit down so as to help longevity - the engine currently revs to 7,500 and I am debating reducing to either 7,250 or 7,000. Can anyone with race experience suggest whether even 250 revs make a difference or should I reduce by a full 500? Power is clearly not a concern.

I would drive it there first, then see if the gearing you have now gets you between 7000 and 7500 at the end of a straight. It's super annoying to hit a limiter just before you hit the brakes for a corner, and not sure it's very healthy for an engine to bounce off the limiter, even if it's at a lower RPM than its safe limit.

Normal F40 is 7800 isn't it? I assume it's a fully forged engine, so 7500 should be fine...you're not spending the whole weekend on the limiter I suspect. Technology and materials have improved over the last 20 years.

    It's a small V8, 7500 won't hurt it.

I thought max revs was 7,500 but on research it appears you are right- I note "As standard the ecu has a soft cut rev limit of 7812rpm and a hard cut of 8012rpm. It has a boost control strategy like a P8 ecu with the boost cut threshold dependent on rpm rather than just a set value, and a transient 5.5psi overboost ability." Maybe I should leave it?

As to the sound, I understand that it becomes a little crisper, a little harsher. We shall see.

I think the bible (BIGTURBO.co.uk - ECU Tuning) is the source of the above, but I think the boost doesn't fall to zero under full throttle as you approach the 7800rpm cut-off in the standard car - I have just about managed to keep my nerve on a track to check this out. It is possible that the above is true, but there is latency in the system with wastegates, amal valves etc that leaves the boost on even as you hit the rev limit - I am not sure.

Normal F40 boost curve looks quite different to what I have seen on an F40GTE (which is close to the LM I suspect). The rev limit is set lower than the 7.8k for the standard car.

Given you are running much higher boost levels (2.6 bar for standard LM vs 1.1) it may be worth having a lower rev limit in the interest of longevity.

Given you have a programmable motec, may be worth setting checking if the rev limit can be set as a function of boost level (say 7k for level 3 and 7.5 for level 1).

Just some thoughts - I am not an expert.

We are actually running quite low boost, circa 1.5 to gives us 720hp as whilst we could get more power at higher levels that does lead to longevity issues, specifically a regular crankshaft change!

I was vaguely considering exactly what you have suggested and dial it back at the max power setting as I'm never really going to notice it so thank you for the suggestion as it reinforces the concept.

I got my books and I have to say, they are very well done. The overall quality is great and I'm happy to have them. They do a wonderful job of covering this restoration.

Thank you Tim for going though the effort to get these books done. I know it hasn't been easy!

    Thank you!

Dragged Colin and Big Rich out of their Hospital beds and signed books on the way Monday-Finally. And will I be pleased to see the back of them!

Clearly Mototechnique had done a great job with the paint as only a few areas that required Topaz's attention to get the car perfect, ready for the custom wrap.
