One person went so far as to say that a good FF driver would kill a lot of the current F1 drivers. That sort of thing is beyond hilarious.

I think who ever made that statement was playing the keyboard.

But then again, some NASCAR idiot made the comment to me and was serious. If Dale Earnhart sr. would go to F1 he would clean up. I said what are you smoking ?

Lewis is fantastic for the Mercedes brand part of the reason younger folks are considering
purchasing cars like CLA $ GLA. Toto and Niki need to think before they go off the hip.
They're eating their words cuz highers ups told them to do so.LH is right to hit back IMO

No it's not. I bought Er indoors a CLA45 AMG for a runaround because it's fast, and has all wheel drive, unlike the BMW equivalent, and the UK weather is so hit and miss. Elton had absolutely nothing to do with it, and th thought that anyone might think he did actually makes me want to sell it, and buy her anything else aside from another Mercedes

To be fair, Hamilton does give Mercedes more street cred than they used to have.

Mercedes, like Jaguar (and Cadillac in the USA) , had established themselves with a nice, loyal following of customers who only ever bought their cars. They grew up with the cars, and they got old with the cars.

In the case of all three manufacturers though, they started to get a reputation for being an old man's car, whilst the likes of BMW and Audi were the choice of the younger generation. That was fine for a long time, after all, it was guaranteed sales, but then they came to realise that their customer base was starting to get old, and quite literally die off!

Suddenly, all three needed to appeal to a whole new generation, and that meant making cars that appealed to the kids with money!

Jaguar went back to a previous successful formula that had worked for them before - Flash looking, noisy roadsters to sell alongside their silent saloons, and suddenly, a younger generation of buyers took notice, and many decided to drop the German Marques.

Cadillac came out with the Escalade, and successfully tapped into the hip hop scene, going from being a manufacturer of vehicles for old fuddy-duddy's, to being the coolest set of wheels on the street for the coolest kids! They then decided that they needed a performance car to add to their range to appeal to younger buyers, and it worked!

Mercedes, who had by now dropped behind BMW and Audi in the popularity stakes also came out with high performance models, but they still weren't seen as being as cool as a BMW or an Audi.

They came back to F1 to get noticed by the younger generation, thinking that having 7 times World Champion Michael Schumacher in the team, alongside the comparatively young Nico Rosberg would generate the required interest, but it didn't. Great as he was, Schumacher was no longer at his peak, and wasn't seen as being cool (in some ways, [and I hate to say this but] he was seen by many as being a bit of a has-been! As an "old man" desperately trying to prove himself against the youngsters - And failing!).

In the case of Nico Rosberg, again, he wasn't seen as being cool - Very few people looked at Nico Rosberg and wished they could be him, and even fewer really cared what he got up to in his life.

What Mercedes needed was someone who appealed to the modern, social network generation. Someone who was seen by many as being cool, someone they wished they could be like, someone who was seen as being stylish, who hung out at all of the trendiest gigs/functions/events, and generated massive media interest.

In Lewis Hamilton they got exactly what they wanted!

Like it or not, it's a fact that he's popular with a lot of the younger generation. He's forever twittering/trending/blogging and posting on facebook about just about everything he does and showing off his lifestyle to the World. He generates media interest in everything he does, from the clothes he wears, the places he goes, the cars he crashes, to the latest trendy model/singer/socialite that he's seen hanging out with. (and is probably hoping to be bouncing on top of!).

It's a fact that Lewis Hamilton is trendy and popular - And so by association, Mercedes have become trendy and more popular again.

That's not to say Lewis Hamilton is the reason behind everyone buying a Mercedes now, but he is a big factor for a lot of customers who are young, with a more ethnic background, who have got a bit of money, and who want a taste of the Lewis Hamilton lifestyle.

Pagani Zonda's have too many pedals for Lewis, he gets easily confused about which pedal is which and crashes them!

That's why he likes the Ferrari LaFerrari and McLaren P1 so much: Two pedals - No confusion!:

Yah I don't buy that honestly - that kids buy Mercs because of Hamilton. Hamilton doesn't drive Mercedes. He drives hyper cars - Pagani; LaF...flies on a jet...wears insanely expensive clothing, etc. Buying a entry-level Merc doesn't give you any of that feeling or association.

Mercedes is still not tapping into the younger market here in Colorado. I do not know anyone under the age of 60 that owns a Mercedes. Audi, BMW and Tesla are dominating our market. Mercedes are definitely seen as an old man's or old lady's car here.

Funny conversation. Hammy never made me want a merc while ferraris failing did not hurt my love of ferraris either. A merc is my father's car...
