I get my new 488 tomorrow Dealer told me there is no break in because the factory already tested the car. Is there a break in and if so what is the recommended procedure? Thanks
Testing the car is something else, breaking in is another. While todays car engines don't need a long breaking in period like in the past, they still have to be not run at its limits for a certain time. Plus, all the other moving components of the car (brakes, suspension, gear box, etc) need to be broken in properly before you take the car to its limits. Some people don't believe in this but I do. Just drive the car as the manual says in the first xxxx miles.
A lot of dealers will tell you to keep it under a certain speed and RPM for a while so you get used to it. Usually 200 miles. Modern cars are not like classics. All the tolerances are already built in and dyno'd. My suggestion is look in the owners manual AND talk to the service manager when you pick it up. Don't be surprised if the sales guy is wrong.
Funny thing, because the head of service department of my Ferrari dealer advises all customers with new cars to drive them hard, so that if something breaks it is under warranty !!!!!!! He also says, that during each drive, the car should hit redline in gear at least once (after warm-up) in order to avoid unburnt fuel mixing with oil...
Most of you drive your cars like 2,000-5,000 miles. You wont own it longer than the warranty in most cases either, so what are you worried about. Hell how many Ferraris are 5 years old and haven't busted 1,000 miles.
Thats funny LOL! On my 458 I tookit easy for 200 miles then redline! I was told no break in from dealer.
Hahaha, so true. I have close to 11,000 on mine. I drive it during winter. Someone at our work parking lot yesterday was surprised it wasn't in storage. I said as far as I know the heated seats and heater was working fine so why store it.
And what a 458 that was!!!! Hey thank goodness you sold it so I now have the loudest 458 hahaha LOL Congrats on your upcoming 488 John and Happy Xmas Eve to you and yours!! Hope you come back down in SoCal to visit us soon!!! xoxoxoxo
