is the suspension lifter really a necessary option for the 458 Spider?
It depends on your area. The roads, entrance and exits from them are pretty good here in FL. Not so much in my hometown in SC. We use it occasionally on our 458. It's a nice feature. You probably don't need it if you don't lower the car. My 430 is lowered and I wish I had a front lift as I scrape the front and occasionally the rear diffuser.
+1. I live in Vegas where it's flat and the roads are good. I never use it, not even on speed bumps, and don't even hesitate going over railroad tracks at city speeds. My car is not lowered. On the other hand......... My 2014 911 Turbo S is lowered and there are times I wish I had it. Always slow way down over railroad tracks. Both cars basically drive in the same areas. I did not have it on my 430, and never had any issues. My SLS is lower to the ground and I have only scraped a couple of times after owning the car almost 4 years. I have spec'd it on my 488 because they tell me it will help with resale. It is not really an option that I want to have.
I can't get in and out of one of my driveways without scraping the nose of my 458, unless I use the lifter.
Its definitely a MUST here on the roads of Bangkok, Thailand, where all the buildings weren't designed equally. I'm at ease with the lifter button in my spider.
How much does it really lift ? One inch or max two ? Over here in The Netherlands I never saw this option on a car
