Finally got a clip, mild few days in the UK and bit of rain to wash the salt away made for good conditions for this time of year. Exhaust isn't totally finished yet, at the moment the quiet mode is by the valve closing almost shut and causing a restriction, works OK but not ideal. Plan to build a fully rated silenced path but this is a lot of extra work. https://youtu.be/QfcucWDCgYo
Regarding dynamic runs - don't do what most people do and many dynamic runners tell you to do: do not just pull the car over and shut it off 10 seconds after the run. The heads are blazing hot and need coolant flow for them to properly else you get heat soak and the coolant begins to boil inside the head. Usually the radiator cap deals with it but I saw a nice Alfa blow a head gasket and some British car have the radiator pop a leak. Keep the engine running for 2 minutes at 1500 rpm.
Exhaust noise for the UK MoT is down to testers discretion, I know a partially deaf tester so no worries there and there is the quiet mode. It's also a 1990 car so no problem ditching the cats.
Thanks, I think the key to this noise is to bring the two sides together as early as possible into a 3" bore in this case, then back out to two and then four. I painstakingly made the collectors and transition pipes by hand to get what I thought was right :/
I have the 348 Challenge exhaust with the middle resonator on my car, along wit Fabspeed headers and cat delete pipes. So its..... a) incredibly loud - in a enclosed car park it makes your ears ring. b) sounds fantastic
X pipe tacked up, its going to get pretty tight up there to get mufflers of any kind there. So theres a worry of making it loud, but also sound bad. Any acoustic thoughts? Image Unavailable, Please Login
Have you thought about building a muffler can around your X-pipe? You'd have to drill a bunch of holes in your X-pipe and then wrap the pipe and stuff the can.
I had not, but it is one choice (maybe only), other would be using helmholtz chambers, dont know Thanks for reply
The proof of the pudding will be in the tasting as they say! I would put some silencing in there even if it's just a small amount just to take the edge off as I have done. Do a search on youtube for the RareFab system, this is unsilenced 348 with a merge pipe and sounds good but just a tad too loud, especially if there is no valve option to quieten it down when needed. If you weld up what you have there and give it a run for a sound check and decide from there.
Please make a similar exhaust for me. This is exactly the sound I want on my 348. What is your price? I need it!
Hi Tommy J, PM already sent, but for this thread I've attached some detailed pictures of the collector and Y transition pieces to go from 2.25 to 3 inch pipe for the valve. There should be enough here for an exhaust builder to make something similar. I spent quite a bit of time just using the CFD program in my mind to design and make the transition pieces so there's probably an easier way to make those.
