I just picked up a nail in the center of my rear tire (2014 458 spider w/ 8,500 miles).

I presume I should not repair (occasional high speed driving).

Do I deed to replace both rear tires (because of one nail in one of the tires) or can I just replace the one?

    Thx in advance...

As an aside, my car comes off warranty next month. I am not going to purchase the extended warranty unless someone convinces me otherwise.

Original tires? If so, you'll need to replace both because there would be a significant difference in tread that can affect handling, especially at speed. Don't repair or patch it. I doubt any reputable shop would offer that anyway.

Don't need to read any further.

    REPLACE!!! (both).

Top speed of your car is well in excess of 325kph/202mph according to the manual.

Tires are the ONLY point of contact between your car and the road. It is obvious, but stop for a minute and think about what it actually means and implies. It's your life.

    Kind regards,

    Nuno.

You need a set of new tires at 8,500 miles regardless of the nail which I would plug in a heartbeat if the mileage was more like 1,500. I would get all four unless you are selling then just the rears.

Same thing happened to me at 5000 miles. I replaced both rears as they were about 1/2 worn. The rears wear faster than the fronts.

Replace, tires are the cheapest part of your car. Cheap insurance!

Thanks all! Yes, tires are the most underrated of equipment. As an aside, if there was no nail, I wouldn't replace them as they have plenty of tread left and the car is driven at least once per week. No "bald spots".

A single nail hole in the center of the tire (not the side wall) can be easily repaired. The material used is as strong as the actual tire. I know this as my brother invented and patented it prior to selling to Goodyear 30 years ago (he is an organic chemist). Granted, if your tire is worn down then get new tires for that reason but you should always have the same wear on drivetrain sides (on fronts OR rears- it's not essential to have the same on all four tires and it's actually rare to have the same on a two wheel drive train car)

    You can repair.
But if half worn I'd replace at your convenience.
If you regularly drive at 7/10th and high speed, replace both now.

My uncle was a Goodyear dealer and store owner, 30yrs.

I have repaired many a tire and never had a problem from it. I doubt you'll be cruising at 202 mph anytime soon. Any street driven car, even a Ferrari, would be fine with a patch. YMMV :).

Spend $300K on a car but save a few hundred dollars by patching an old tire rather than replacing the tire? Doesn't make much sense to me.

I think you're right. And it's not $300. It's two tires at $400 each plus Ferrari installation which makes it about $1,200. All because of a nail. Therefore, if unnecessary, I'd rather save $1,000.

Interestingly, people are arguing this both ways.

I would replace both. I had a patched tire and it blew out 3 hours from home. NO spare. It was an all day ordeal to find a tire and install it myself with aid of friends. No one wanted to touch the car.

ZR (unlimited speed) plugs have been available since at least the 1990s. If you look at a plug and how it is installed, you won't worry. RCorsa, are these what you are talking about?

It can be repaired , no problems. If done properly, that patch will last longer than the tires. I've done it and tracked the car last year.

99% of Ferrari owners will never exceed the limitations of a patch... odds are this owner is one of those.

My Ferrari dealer said they do not patch these high speed rated tires. I have patched tires on my Porsche's with no discernible issues. I don't want to be penny wise, etc. Interesting that there is no consensus.

Of course they don't. How else could they overcharge you for a set of tyres:D

I've asked a few tyre manufacturing tyre techs about this on a number of occasions. Here there actually were a consensus. According to those I've spoken to, a simple well installed plug was not a problem at all. What matters according to the guys I talked to, are these two factors.

1: Is the tyres more than 2-2½ years old, replace both.
2: Is the tread worn down by more than 2-2½mm, replace both.

Ok. But why risk it? It's a couple of grand tops vs. playing russian roulette. Risk vs reward and all that. Last time I checked, we only live once.

If I'm alerted to something that can potentially lead to trouble on a tire or wheel, if there's a doubt, there's no doubt: replace for a new item. Like I said, the 458 is capable of 0-100kph in 3 seconds and a top speed of 340kph. Think speed, pressure, temperature, aerodynamics, stress, fatigue, etc.

    Kind regards,

    Nuno.

I hear exactly this over in my country too.

The plugs its self are robust, it's the state of the tyre that matters.

ive patched/plugged tires on multiple P cars and ducatis and f cars. no issues at all. I don't drive conservatively.

its more about how worn the tires are.
