Anyone know the difference?
Green is yellow with black added. Traditionally used for interior on WWII aircraft due to reduced glare from the darker shade. Why didn't they just make it all green? I dunno. This is what I was taught when learning to be an aircraft mechanic but that doesn't mean it's right.
Yeah, zinc chromate is usually yellow, which doesn't jive for Mil-Spec, so green pigments are added. But it can depend on the substrate.

Well, at BoatUS, it's green!! LOL! I think in my discussion of it, I refer to it as green because "if still present" that seems to be the color, on my old wheels.
Chromate primers/coatings are really toxic, so my guess is that the product at ACE is something else.
Yes. Plus a rattle can will give you virtually no millage/thickness of product protection. Use to use zinc chromate primers in the Body Shop on things such as aluminum Corvette headlight covers etc.
Looks like a nice finish. Did you mask the chamfered face where the lug bolt clamps? There are not supposed to be painted since any paint will interfere with the bolt clamping. The mag wheels have alu inserts so that part can be left unprimed/unpainted.

Fascinating!! That indeed "holds the answer"!! I think your approach is very close to the OEM finish! Motivation for me to get in the garage this week! To those looking in, in Houston Texas our "winter" for Christmas has been 72 to 82 degrees F. So, pretty good "painting weather"!!!
I answered a text just this morning about wheel paint from the new owner of my #22641. Trouble is he has spent SO much on the new paint, that "chipped wheels" may not serve.... They found a very rare color, when they sanded it down to metal. Turns out "Azzuro Metallica" was not the Factory color! I am hoping to see the new paint soon!
Zinc Chromate primer is green at least all of it I've ever used or seen. It is made for aluminum and is good stuff but toxic as all get out. It is hard to find nowadays with all the EPA restrictions. The yellow stuff we used at Boeing and Lockheed is a two part system that is water based and eco friendly and not zinc at all.
These 3 Dupli-Color products produce a nice result and are inexpensive. DPP101 HWP101 HWP103 The color is not far off from oem. The metal-flake is very fine. Plus the coats go on very thin. Best DIY finish I have tried. Best to place quarters or washers over bolt inserts. 1" round adhesive labels also available on Amazon and elsewhere cheap.
