In preparation for the sky show on Australia Day in Perth a Grumman Mallard seaplane crashed into the Swan River. Sadly both on board were killed on impact.

Due to the event a lot of people were filming and there are a couple of views of the incident. Any ideas as to what happened here?

Stall spin. The grumman amphibians are my favorite and another one is gone. :(

Low level, tight turn, too slow... equals bad outcome.

My brother has owned a Goose for over 25 years... sad to see a Grumman bite the dust that way.

Yes I posted up in here http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/aviatorchat-com/542103-2017-great-eastern-fly-evans-head.html but obviously no-one looked or maybe I should have done separate thread to get noticed..

Anyway a terrible tragedy and I just got interviewed on radio today about it since I was inside that plane only a few weeks ago.

We can speculate what happened as per above and *perhaps* it is what it looks like.. but also don't forget other major possibilities such as mechanical issue or medical event can give rise to what we saw here.

We will have to wait patiently for ATSB report to get all the facts.

Reminded me of the B-52 crash at Fairchild AFB and the Nimrod crash into Lake Ontario.

He had refurbished the Mallard and flown it to Australia not long ago.

Looks like stall to me, but yes could have been a medical issue. Doesn't look mechanical in nature, unless the airspeed indicator wasn't working and contributed to a stall.

Donv, I'd love to learn more about your brother's Goose, pics, etc. if you wouldn't mind starting a new thread, I and I'm sure many others would enjoy it. A Mallard, or Goose has always been a pipe dream of mine.

This is a nice (but horribly lo-res) video of my brother's airplane:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-t2usaSffU

Technically, his is a Mckinnon Super Goose (although the conversion was sold to an outfit called Antilles-- I think they're out of business now, though). It is an amazing airplane.

In the second and third video you can see what appears to be some sort of flash immediately prior to the plane going nose down. Pardon my ignorance, but does anyone what that is?
