HAHA I knew Carlo would Subscribe to this post....he needs the same kind of weekend sound therapy that I do, LOL
This is the craziest tunnel sound 458 ever produced. Please don't compare it to any 488. https://youtu.be/XeP6q6e12bc?t=28s
Totally subjective... but to me, as far as V8's go, it really doesnt get much better than IPE on a 458 that still has its burbles. (This also applies to F430 with IPE) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQA-TT8SYyk
Dave, I accept as entirely valid your technical explanation, but either in neutral or engine under load, a 488 can't compare to a 458 in terms of sound (and that's not the only point I believe the 458 is more human, alive, emotional and better) . In my very personal and partial opinion, under load the 458's sound is even more glorious and the difference to a 488 is even greater, due to the turbo hiss. It may bother some, some may claim that it's barely noticeable, but it's there, it exists, it's real (and yes, you guessed it, I don't like it). Kind regards, Nuno.
Mine sounds exactly like that with (only) valves open. Clearly there is a very big difference between the 458/488 tunnel sounds. It is truly one of the reasons I have been reticent to part with mine, after looking at every car we have discussed on this forum. Best
I just got an '11 that has pops and burbles like my 430 did. I'm amazed at the sound. Is this because my exhaust wasn't flashed? Can't wait to get my remote valve controller installed. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Haha btw just had a very LOUD Sunday with some good friends, EPIC!!! This thread is making me want to drive her!!!
at 47 secs the scenery looks suspiciously familiar to this google street view. https://www.google.com/maps/@37.8626532,-122.2091323,3a,75y,17.68h,95.39t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s9A7ScbDSNRDC1dCOi_-qJQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656 mexico eh?
I personally think the 458 will turn out to be one of the best Ferrari's built since the old 328. It seems so far to be a very solid car.
Certainly seems so. Everything points in that direction. We love the sound of our 458s so much that sometimes it may seem that's the only reason why the car is so amazingly and mesmerizingly special. It's not just the noise, the feel and the x-factor in it. I love to recap like this: - Interior layout using input from Michael Schumacher. - Last Pininfarina badge on a V8 Ferrari. - Triple exhaust to pay tribute to the F40. - Last naturally aspirated Ferrari V8. - First Ferrari V8 to crack the 200mph barrier as the official top speed (>202mph). - First mid engined Ferrari to have direct gasoline injection injection, double clutch gearbox. - Horsepower per liter record in the segment (Italia 127hp/liter and Speciale 134hp/liter) Add to the that the design, the sound and the feel... And some Ferraris of old have become classics and highly sought-after, collectible cars for much, much less... And with less importance in the history of the brand. Add to that some of my favorite quotes on the car: "I wouldn't even care if this thing ate one of my legs. This is beyond anything. What a machine! The 458 is one of the all time greats. I really genuinely believe this is better than an F40. I never thought I'd say that, but it's true. It really is absolutely, unbelievably, mesmerizingly brilliant" "It's like driving something that is actually alive. One of the best cars in the whole of Human History. Ever. It just is". "It's the prettiest car Ferrari have made in the last 3 decades. And it drives even better than it looks" "Almost nothing on Earth is as good as this. Except something I just thought of including Cameron Diaz and some honey. But come to think of it, even that isn't as good as this" Jeremy Clarkson (as seen on Top Gear) on the 458 Italia. "This car is the best thing in the world, isn't it?" "I love this car. This is my favourite ever car". "This is the best car I've ever driven, by a good way. It's just amazing!" Jason Plato (as seen on Fifth Gear) on the 458 Italia. I may end up buying other Ferraris and/or selling any of the others I have, but this I can promise you without fear of contradiction: I will take my 458 with me to the grave. And I'm 31. Kind regards, Nuno.
Correct! Just make sure to tell your Fcar service NOT to update your ecu software each time you bring the car in for service or other, if not you will loose the burbles forever weep weep weep
Guys, the 458 has several ECUs or just the one? Is it possible to update other ECUs or some parameters on the same ECU, leaving the engine ECU or engine parameters untouched on the one ECY, not to lose the exhaust pops? Or each and every update, besides being irreversible, is also a total, integrated systems update? Kind regards, Nuno.
Good question, afaik the software update solely touches upon engine management ecu. It makes the DCT shift smoother, and also reconfigures fuel maps to make the car more emissions friendly, which explains why the pops are lost when the software is updated as they are the result of unburnt fuel hitting exhaust parts caused by the incipient, and less 'conservative', fuel map. Very best
Carlo, have you ever heard about modifying the 458's flywheel? If it's possible, that would make the downshift sounds like ICBM. Many people have done it on Porsche.
Haha like it needs to sound more any more intense LOL Unf. have not heard of flywheel mods on the 458 series, unless a one-off in-house job has been performed somewhere.. very best
Thanks, Carlo! Smoother and emissions-friendly are two concepts that don't go well with any supercar, let alone the 458. Just to be on the safe side, I'll ask for no ECU update of any sort. I just hope they'll don't update it anyway if my car gets recalled for some reason, or if they decline to service the car for whatever reason (for instance, liability in case of DCT failure) if I refuse to update. But one thing at a time. How many yet-to-update 458s out there? Anyone? Me and Carlo = 2! Kind regards, Nuno.
