Just went to McLaren 720S launch at MTC. Was conducted in a mind blowing minimalist auditorium, the car is STUPENDOUS. Totally new carbon monocoque.

Design - totally new, eradicated side vents, glass roof with centre carbon support (visible). New interior also moves game on totally. Overall like a baby Pagani, all mauled look has gone. All plastic interior gone - aluminium. All LCD, screen folds away.

Performance - quicker than LT, 0/200 in less than 7.5 seconds. Fastest gear change of any production car.

    Fraction above 488 money.

Ferrari will not know what to make of this car, its that big a step up.

I am a massive Ferrari fan. This car will be a wake up call.

Don't all start waffling on about depreciation etc, just celebrate innovation and guts to do this in 6 years !

Spy shots do not do this car justice.

Sounds great and very interesting. I'm sure it will be stunning.

Did they fire it up so people could have a listen? What was the debut colour?

More Hyper, it looks like a crazy bargain, some similarities to Huayra but better aero, aero runs through hollow doors so no ugly scoop.

Ferrari will up their game but Lamborghini?

The F12M is, I don't believe the competition here, the 488 definitely is.

Yes, and that should be pretty obvious to everyone except the auto blog hacks that will review the cars in a few months time.

That's the same spec (probably the same car) they showed us at the McLaren Winter Ball in December - absolutely gorgeous, isn't it?

    I'm getting my dealer's first 720S allocation!

More to life than numbers or performance. Plenty of room in the world for Mclaren and Ferrari to both make great cars. I want both company's to do great.

    Agreed! Lots of great choices.

I also think, having seen P14 in person, that McLaren's will hold their value better and better going forward. Their product line is going to make a lot more sense once the P14 is in full production and I think it's going to be a very highly-sought-after car for quite some time. I sold my 675LT coupe for $20K over what I paid and I was offered pretty close to what I paid for our 570S if I traded it in for a 570GT. I was considering doing that but I'm so attached to the 570S I couldn't bear the couple of months I'd go without having it as orders for new McLarens take several months now.

I don't think Ferrari considers the 488 a competitor for the 720. More like the 650S. The 488 is 2 years older after all and based on the same basic platform as the 458. What I hope is, that Ferrari will build the 488 VS to compete with the P14 platform.

Couldn't agree more. Looking back through the history of sports cars, I think we're in a new golden era of sports cars. So much is happening and performance is out of this world. I can't remember when we were last able to make a list as long as can be made currently of interesting and amazing sports car and super GTs - we have to go back pretty far. I definitely think one can do oneself a huge favor by forgetting the brands a bit, and just embrace what's on offer. It's truly mind blowing.

I may end up getting the 720S Spider instead of the 488 Spider now. The power, suspension control/dynamics, look, performance all better plus hypercar looks I'm sold. Never thought I would say it but Mclaren may have just converted me!

Big question now is with the imminent arrival of P14 will this decrease 675LT price ?

Assuming most people find it more attractive and modern and the performance eclipses the 675, then I think it will. That said, the 675 is supposed to be more of a 'raw' experience but I don't think that will be enough to stem the sharp price declines which I expect to occur minute after cover comes off in Geneva. I think a lot of current 675 owners will want to trade in which won't help values either.

The major advantage Ferrari had over McL before was great NA engines. Now??

McLaren's are becoming more engaging and less sterile, and Ferrari has gone turbo. And carbon tub vs. aluminum. There will be a big role reversal in mid-engine market if Ferrari doesn't react in a major way.
