All, i am a new owner to a 99 F355 and i may be going through the engine due to finding metallic shimmering in the oil. ive looked around all over the place at OEM ferrari parts prices and trying to find good quality equivalents and it seems superformance is a good source for some of the large ticket items. anyone have any luck with their pistons/rings, full gasket kit, main/rod bearings, etc? i want to do it "right" the first time, but i dont necessarily think just because it says Ferrari on the box it means other manufacturers couldnt build certain parts to superior standards. i dont believe in spending $250 for one set of Ferrari piston rings when another manufacturer can make a equal or better part for 1/5 the price. thanks Tom.
I recently got their rod bearings and they were great, fit perfectly. They were Ferrari parts and 1/3 the cost. Got them less than a week after ordering them. .
Nice! i know that sometimes the company who make the parts FOR ferrari you can get elsewhere, similar to other parts on these cars. for the rod bearings, superformance says they are made to "Vandervell VP2 Spec". Does Vandervell they make the bearings for Ferrari? are you rebuilding your engine? what did you do regarding the liners/rings/pistons? i have yet to get my motor apart so not sure how bad it is quite yet, but still trying to prepare.
I wouldn't buy parts until you get in there. Might be as simple as the tensioner pad falling off and chain wearing on the pad mount. Could be anything. Have you sent the oil out for analysis? it can e very informative.
Dave is correct. And it was just an example of somthing simple that could have the symptoms described. Chain/tensioner. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Your right...it could be simple. I put new oil and filter on it. My plan was to drive it enough to contaminate the new oil and then get the fresh oil with a few hundred miles on it, analyzed. Also I will take the new filter apart like I did the old one. The old one had about 4 glitter sized flakes of aluminum in it when I spread the element out.
I normally worry about rod bearings, in the past when I would have to bearing failures on other cars I would start hearing the engine knock but this engine sounds great. I obviously don't want it to fail to where it starts knocking then there is some crank work required and costs go up in the rebuild.
Also there is what seems to be a chain "clattering" noise coming from the front. Mostly evident when cold.
