Rarely has a group of collector cars been as extensively chronicled and scrutinized as the GTO. Arguably, it is one of the most beautiful automobiles ever. Which is the best one however, as far as being all original, lower miles (does this even matter with these cars?), and I am sure most importantly, race history? Pictures would help to back up your argument....

IMO this one is the best. No fog lights. It's beautiful.

Googled it on the Bonham's website. Beautiful car....but it killed its driver (RIP)! Doesn't this mean wrecked and repaired?? That would sure be some negative karma for me.

I would say Mr Wang's #4219GT but i also like the #3445GT which is also my favourite 250 GTO.

4293GT is a very good one, with great history and no known damages. ¿Has it it´s original body, engine and gearbox?

Also, for me, 4091GT is BEAUTIFUL. Rebodied in period on 64 body, has a great history and it´s looks is superb.

3445GT of course is a beautiful car, but far from being one of the best, as it had been rebodied at least a few times, crashed several times, etc, etc. But at least, is the most seen GTO in the last years, and i applaud that.

    Nicolás.

    Rebodied "in period"? Definition?
4091 GT received a new body in 1974 in USA, which is not really "in period" as by that time the car was more than ten years old already. The factory issued the Certificate of Origin for 4091 GT on 14 December 1962.

4293GT's original rear axle is said to be in 250 GTO 4153GT.

Steve: The factory routinely "mixed and matched" parts between GTO's in period, when the cars were in for race prep or service. However, the factory generally DID keep records of all the parts swaps.

Jess Pourret, when he was writing his book, told me that the driver was impaled on the shifter.

I'm sure you're correct, Dyke. In this instance the axles of 4153GT and 4293GT may have been swapped by Ecurie Francorchamps, who owned both cars at the time. 4153GT is also said to have 3767GT's original gearbox. Engine in the car is a dry sumped SWB engine from 2445GT with 6 carb GTO set up. The owner of the car also has the original 4153GT GTO engine, but has not fitted it. Source - Keith Bluemel's book on 4153GT.

I would still say #4293GT since its largely original, finished 2nd at Le Mans and was never badly crashed. My 2 cents. Mind you any GTO would sit well in my GARAGE......

My comments re the swapping of parts between the cars wasn't a criticism.

Marcel, of course i didn´t know about the new body in 1974. I meant the "rebodied in period" as it was born as a Series I GTO and converted to Series II by the factory in 1964.

    Thank you for your clarification.

    Nicolás.

Which are the GTO´s that are NOT rebodied, retaining its original bodies?

Can someone please indicate which were the factory original (not series I re-bodied) series II GTO's? Thank you.

#3223. It's the first GTO built, and I had the privilege to see it run many times at the Elkhart Lake Historic races in the hands of Dr. Bob Bodin.

Slightly off topic but just to blow your mind, the factory also built a unique 250 GTO and fitted it with 330 LMB coachwork as new for Luigi Chinetti, check out pictures of #4713GT.

    I would have #4293GT, 5571GT and a 330GTO (either #3765LM or 4561SA) but I am not greedy!
