Correct material selection for o ring inside the end of the exhaust cam?

    Ok, for anyone following along..

    4redude was kind enough to post a reference to the size of the o ring in question. According to the UNI (Italian organization for standardization) OR 2037 is 1.78mm cross section and 9.25mm internal diameter. When those numbers are converted to inches, the cross section is 0.070" and the id is 0.364". The one I found on McMaster (from my measurements) is 0.07" cross section and 0.364"id. I'd say those are pretty close to the same size!

    The whole reason I was asking about this is that it would make sense that o ring sizes are standard across the board (English and metric) as they are mostly manufactured in countries that use the metric system.

    If this is the O-Ring that seals the rotor mount end of the intake cam, just an FYI/PSA.

    My '81 NA had no such o-ring even though it was listed and pictured in the Parts Catalogue.

    After €1500 spent, come to find out mine were glued-in. There is no groove for o-ring placement; no nothing.

    YMMV.

    The o ring I am talking about in this thread is one year only for the 83' 308 QV. Per 4redude's post, the same o ring was also used in the 246 Dino and in a New Holland tractor. I was just really using that o ring as an example to learn how to source one from a hard ware outfit as opposed to the ferrari parts dealer. They are cheap enough, but I was interested in learning more about materials and such so I can find parts from other sources if desired. Don't need to pay $7 shipping for a $1.50 o ring (that should be $0.36), when I could potentially find this at auto zone or ace, or McMaster where I was already ordering other stuff. I also chose that particular o ring because it was relatively benign ( on the potential to cause harm if slightly off in size, and pretty easy to get at if it ended up leaking oil) and even though it was listed on ricambi's site, they would have had to order it special, which just takes an extra week. Others did point out that it could be found from some other ferrari part outfits, which is great, but I didn't want to make a special order just for that o ring. Superformance, where I ordered the majority of parts for the major, did not list it. I know it's good to take vehicle maintenance seriously with a Ferrari, and I do, but many parts are standard items that can be found from many alternative sources. It's valuable to understand how the basic parts are sourced and standardized, especially when trying to replace common worn items like o rings, washers, nuts, clamps etc. I am sure anyone that has ordered and installed the hill engineering bearings for the tensioners has noticed that "made in Japan" along with the part number are stamped on the plastic seal of the bearings. It's probably even covered in the parts cross reference thread, but I didn't look it up cause I had already bought the hill engineering ones. They are wonderful, and hill engineering figured out that they are a direct replacement for oem, but they are obviously an off the shelf item, used in many other applications. Otherwise, they would cost $500 a piece if they were made only for a ferrrari 308 belt tensioner. Just saying...
