Whenever I turned to a right hand lane there is this huge blind spot that makes me nervous. With constant shoulder checks and a passenger mirror that is limited it took longer to make sure that it was all clear before turning. I succumbed and bought a small convex mirror to help and it works. Any other solutions?

The picture posted is very useful. A quick way to get close to this setup is to lean your head next to the drivers side window and adjust the mirror to where you can just see a small portion of the left side of the car. For the right mirror lean over the center console and adjust until you can just see a small portion of the right side.

+1. That's how I do it, too. Rental cars, everything I drive. And then fine tune from this rough adjustment by letting a few cars pass you on either side until the image of the overtaking car is "handed off" from your inside middle mirror to your outside mirror. Depending on your car, you can cover most everything behind and along side you that way. You still need to turn your head as a final check though, because motorcycles or very short cars could be hiding there in a coverage gap.

I really appreciate the information and will follow your comments. I thought about European mirrors but at $1100 is quite expensive and getting sensors just like the new cars involves drilling.

Took a look at the Broadway mirror on Amazon and it would look awful in the car.

Thanks but having a 1/4 panel reference point is invaluable.

The 458 is not alone in having a blind spot.
The 360 and even the Cali have their issues.

Heck my old 993 Porsche had a blind spot too.

Perhaps in the future we will have a camera system which will solve the blind spot once problem once and
    for all.

I am going for functionality and safety than looks in this area.
I want to be able to change lanes swiftly and safely.
The bigger issue is the driver side mirror. It doesn't get moved far enough to cover the blind spot.

Only if you are backing into a garage or tight parking space, and need to be sure you're not going to scrape your fender. Otherwise, you don't. Your quarter panel is always going to be in the same place. What you need is to make sure nothing's in the blind spot. Better see that than your fender.

The only problem with this method is that you could still miss seeing a very short car, like a spec Miata trying to sneak past you on a corner. The car could leave the inside mirror field of view without appearing in your side mirror because it's so short. But you'd have a far better chance of seeing it with the SAE method.

Yes this car has massive blind spot, spider even worse, you got to look over the hump. So it's hump check instead of shoulder check. LOL.
Small mirror won't help in the night. One way to be safe is always merge into highway at high speed.

The blind spot is bad, it was worse on my 360. Anyway, here is a solution:
    1. Line up parallel to the car next to you
    2. Punch the throttle
    3. Count to 3 and change lanes

It is a sure bet that nothing else (except a very few cars) can accelerate like the 458!

Nope..................If you can see your quarter panel in either of your side mirrors they are NOT properly adjusted. We used to learn this stuff in Drivers Education, do they not teach how to properly adjust your mirrors any more? That along with parallel parking seem to be lots arts.

I also had a problem with the drivers side blind spot. It was too unsettling not know for sure if there was a car on the left. I bought a cheap small adjustable mirror that helps. It may look a little off but I'd rather be safe than sorry!!

This confirms my concern about blind spots I was not expecting.

I'll second the nasty blind-spot in 458 spider (don't know about Italia).

My solution is to try not to drive with the roof on so that I can at least slide up as high as possible in the seat to get a bit of a view over the hump. Or avoid roads that I know where the entry angle could be precarious.

Have had a couple of situations where it was REALLY scary having to signal for as long as possible and just really hoping that there was nothing there - fortunately other road users do tend to "see" you in a car like this and keep a bit of distance - as someone once advised me about driving in Paris "Either drive a Rolls Royce or a totally beat-up car; then they will keep their distance. Drive a normal car and they will just crunch you if necessary"

I was thinking that it would be a good idea to have a side camera rather than a parking camera in the 458....!

In comparison, my old 458TB has tiny slits in the back but overall possibly the best all-round visibility I have every experienced!

    Regards

    Mark
