My RSR Build

    I love the shape of both the Dino and early 911. The dino has all the curves and compound curves, so I would have to say to me the Dino has the edge. I got one of the bodies back from media blast and overall it's not to bad. My big delivery comes next week of flares etc etc. In the meantime I'm restoring the parts I'll reuse. I started with the pedal box and rebushed everything and added pedal covers. I got 930 trailing arms which I had vapor blasted. They look new!!

    These are some of the reinforcements I'm doing. Front swaybar mount, Front strut, rear spring plate, rear shock tubes, front shock tubex, new rear sway bar mounts (not shown). This is going to be a street car, is undercoating recommended as original on these early 911's?

    If race prepared, I'd suggest not. Surely they would have looked for every ounce of weight savings.

    My '77 was, but was that factory? Don't know for sure, could have easily been part of a rustproofing package applied at the dealer.

    Did a little digging, as I recalled, they used a gooey rubbery undercoating, 35lbs of it on the undercarriage of their late 60's to mid 70's cars.

    As soon as I saw that, I did recall having to scrape some nasty goo off the bottom of my 911S back in the day to access screws and such. It was, apparently, a factory effort at sound reduction and corrosion protection, was was brushed on by hand.

    It was a bear to remove. I'd suggest finding something a bit less nasty.

    I wouldn't use any undercoating/unterbodenschutz except a bit dusted on the top of the fenders to absorb stones being thrown from the tires. Much easier to keep clean without.

    For a faithful 2.8 rsr look you can't use the 930 rear arms. Track would be too wide to get the sexy deep dish look. I know the guy that import high quality forged Braid Fuchs wheels that most of the latest nice tribute cars are running with. In fact he came over to my house to take a few measurements of my car for customers. His service, and wheels are highly recommended

    Looks like you're having fun!!! Here is my friend Alois Ruf's RSR that he built for himself with a 3.4Liter (964 block) Motronic high butterfly throttle body injection, twin-plug and G50 gearbox. Puts out 340hp. I've driven it on a number of occasions. It's amazing!!! So fast and so much fun to drive!! Note the rare Porsche factory RSR soft flares and real 9/11X15 Fuchs. This car is all business!!! Built on a reinforced '73 tub.

    That thing is just cool! With its builder/operator being an added bit of reassurance; kind of a pedal-down take on the old VW ad that asks how the snowplow driver gets to the snowplow.

    Sorry to ask such a tacky question....I am interested in having someone build an exact replica of a 73RS.

    I am just starting to put out feelers to the high end shops. Car included, the prices I am getting back are around $225-265. The price spread comes from if the car is a touring vs LW and the motor. I want a turn key build.

    I would want a true exact nut and bolt clone. No hot rods or 75% there cars.

    Doing the math I am not understanding where their pricing is coming from. Here is why,..would love schooling anywhere I am ignorant:

    (I had 67S restored a few years ago. Estimates are based on that experience)

    Core longhood. 73T or the like. Little to no rust. Coupe, no sunroof. No frame damage. Motor, paint, interior can all be ratty. $50-60k.

    Interior with exact replica sport seats $12-15k.

    Paint and body. I know paint alone from a high-end shop is around $30k. RS flares, bumpers etc. High side around $15k. Paint and body $45k

    Harvey finished wheels in exact sizes with rubber. $10k.

    Engine. 2.7 case would be more $$ vs a 2.4 made into a 2.5. Injection. Both would have 210 HP. All the details would be perfect. $20k for the rebuild of whatever the core car has. If I wanted a proper 2.7 case add $10k.

    Suspension. $10k.

    Glass and rubber. $5k.

    Plating, chrome etc. $5k.

    Some mid level audio. $3k.

    Gauges rebuilt. $2500.

    $165-175k all in. add $10k for a 2.7 case.

    What am I missing? Why am I being told that a turn key car is $225+? Is there really a $50k+ margin on these builds? Am I out of touch with the build prices?

    I can't help you there as I'm not doing an exact copy. I'm doing a tribute, I'm sure to get that 10% exactly right is expensive.

    I don't know why you'd build an "exact" replica of a '73 RS. Even owners of real RS's want more out of their cars. In reality a '73 RS is a good car but has a low compression motor, OK brakes, OK suspension (not much different than an optioned T, E or S). Building a "period correct" sports purpose 911 with period performance mods such as 2.8 Mahle high compression pistons, twin-plug, RSR cams, high butterfly MFI injection, close ratio box, RSR brakes etc etc will yield a more original car and if done right, a more valuable fun car vs an "exact" RS clone. Put all of that in a stock looking '72 or '73 and you have a great 911! That's only my opinion though.

    i do intend to drive/track it...
