Okay, after a short meeting this morning the following has been determined. 1. Each mold will be around $4-6k. 2. 2 molds minimum for the pads, spring ends and spring spacers. May take 3 molds. So to do the molds it would be around $12k-18k. The parts would cost a couple bucks to make after that expense ( Using nylon 66 / pa6.6 material ). So, the cost is much more considerable than I figured it would be at least with this particular company and I'm not sure how much costs would change going with another source. Here is the big question, who out there is interested in keeping the 348/355 stock flywheel alive or do we let it die a slow and miserable death? Quick math says that the kits would be about $500 per flywheel kit if we sold 36 kits. I am more than happy to invest in perhaps 10 kits but would rely on the community to pony up the $$ for the remaining 26 kits. I would then hope to sell the additional kits that I would be purchasing to recover as much of my "investment" as possible. So, any takers? EDIT: Just to clarify, many more than 36 kits can be made. Matter of fact, for every kit sold over the 36 mark I think we could use the funds to pay the original "investors" back? Again, I'm not in this to make money. I just want to keep the car stock and enjoy her! From the time the order for the part is place it will take 2-3 weeks to get the first parts (tooling must be machined and the injection method worked out). Once the dimensions have been varified then full production will occur and would take about another week before the final product would be available.
Yup. Labor in figuring out how to inject mold into the part efficiently, designing the mold, milling the mold, etc... if we had 100 348 and mondial owners total go in on this it could become very cheap per person. The mondial flywheel is the same correct?
Injection molding set up cost is always a very big expense. If the parts could be CNC'd it would be a much more palatable deal. I would still buy a kit if this went through.
For it to go through, I need a few folks with skin in the game. I can get a used flywheel for $2500 and use best of mine and the used unit. But that doesnt aid other 348 owners. These parts will wear eventually for everyone... I am hoping this can be put together.
Have you looked at just buying a used part on eBay? Call GT Parts in Phoenix. I am sure they have a few.
Still trying to source the plastic parts. Please tell me there is a way to fix my flywheel without paying $7500 for a new one especially considering everything in my flywheel appears fine except the plastic parts. I've seen a used flywheel for $2600 but I'm not sure of the condition of the plastic parts in it and I'm not much of a gambler. Some folks have welded the flywheel, are there any issues with this as far as breaking other driveline parts? Hopefully I get some good news soon because I don't have any use for a crippled garage queen...
Just to add another thought.... something I saw the other day, and have no idea if this is a good/bad/ugly option for you. Well, having the parts made never got off the ground because wan not able to find a source for original parts to copy. BUT GOOD NEWS!!!!! MDClutches just shipped me new springs (their very own product), and all the plastic bits I need to get this beauty back on the road. If anybody else is in need of parts I'd give Andrew call/email and let him know what you need.
I can see that they are selling these parts on Ebay: Ferrari 348 355 Dual mass voith system flywheel springs | eBay, Ferrari 348 355 Dual mass voith system flywheel spring end stops | eBay, Ferrari 348 355 Dual mass voith system flywheel spring sliders | eBay. They say the chocolate bars are coming soon.
But unless someone is producing the plastic parts or sitting on a pile of old stock, they will be needed. I would get the parts scanned and try to get a competitive offer. I would also implicate some of our EU friends as there are many small, mom and pop injection moulding shops in the EU. Portugal would be a good target.
