Nope, Alonso was beaten in 2007 by his rookie teammate! Tied on points, but Hamilton was ranked/scored higher in the WDC due to podium counts etc.

Kimi is great and should have a strong year, but we will very soon need to resurrect the Massa Sucks thread!

Don't tell the hamilfans that. They'll go nuts over the tie score and how he wiped the floor with Alonso.

But yes you are correct except 2001 at minardi when his teammate finished 9th to his 11th but they both had 0 points.

They actually had equal podiums total. Hamilton came 2nd because he had 1 more second place finish. Nothing like being tied for the first loser.

I try 200% in avoiding such sayings :p

    So, you're a Belieber

I liked Alonso when he turned up on the scene, then thought he was an eeejit, then he cheated with that Italian cheat at Singapore, then he ratted out McLaren (good on him :p ), then he screwed up a possible WDC when he worried too much about Webber and let Vettel slip through and finally he sooked it and left for greener pastures :p :p :p :p

Good luck Fernando, ya gunna need it with that Japanese BBQ :D

Mate, give me a call and you can stay at my place

Aircon should be allowed back into the F1 section, there are far worse posters who get away with murder (or a close facsimile :) )

I have an ulterior motive for wanting him back here, he is driving us mad extrapolating all the F1 info from here to the Aussie section in his faux F1 section :p

Please mods, let him back before I strangle him :p

I too really hope to fly there one day; and I should be giving serious consideration to that trip in the years to come, while I'm still relatively young to really enjoy it. New Zealand is only second on my list, but that trip is indeed the longest one you can do from France, because NZ is the perfect antipods to France (= flying in any direction, the length of the trip is the same). But I don't like long flights that much (14 to 15 hours is my limit) and I hate airports and connecting flights.

er, 22nd to 23rd according to my research. What happened to Tarso Marques I wonder? But I am surprised as I remember being impressed with Alonso in the Minardi.

    John,

The team cheated with Piquet not Alonso, and I still don't think McLaren cheated anymore than any other team (Toyota had all the Ferrari drawings too and other teams have been caught. My opinion is that is how technology improves and there is no concept of intellectual property in motorsport), it was simply a Max versus Ron issue with Ferrari happily prodding the fire to ensure they won the WDC. Remember they stopped Stepney's career ... In fact I believe Ferrari set up McLaren and hats off to them ... very clever. Also unless we were in his seat, dealing with a completely bias team that were sncking up big time over Elton, we don't know how we would have dealt with it*. In regards to his time at Ferrari, he did far better than either Kimi or Massa and the car was a heap of rubbish that he damn nearly won the WDC in!!!!.

Plus if you want to talk about cheats, should we start talking about Michael Schumacher? Such a great driver ruined by the obsession to win at all and any cost :(

How you judge a driver is if he can beat his team mate as if the car is good, that is all you have to do. Alonso consistently does unlike the rest of the grid, including Elton.
    Pete
    * Interesting to note that the McLaren down turn started with the running of Elton ... hmmm ...

I am the same: I avoid flying as much as possible.

I just don't like the hassle of airports; to me they ruin the benefit of as good holiday.

I must prefer touring by car, being in charge of my travel, enjoying driving and admiring the scenery.

So, I don't think I will travel outside Europe ever again.

And the one I hate the most is Roissy-Charles de Gaulle, so even before starting the trip I'm already set-up on the wrong foot...because I have to start almost all travels by this third world place!

IMO Aircon should never have been banned from this section..all of this was the consequence of a Troll that simply took too long to be erradicated. Last year was a very bad year for the f.1 section...Aircon is missed by many of us..his aussie humour kept things a lot more interesting around here...losing him and with Ian's passing, the f.1 section became a much poorer place...but it think it will get a bit better, and maybe one day they'll alow Aircon's return...

I think big airports are all the same.
My daughters fly a lot, all over the world, and tell me about airports in others countries that are absolutely terrible in Italy, India, Turkey, Brazil, USA, etc... with long queues to check in, lengthy delays, poor accommodations, lack of sanitation, no rest area, etc... this before the customs inspection and immigration procedures, etc...
It's enough to put me off...

Coming from London, I went through CDG once; it looked like I was walking for miles to get my connection to North Africa. At times, I worried that I was lost; there are just endless corridors between terminals! I must have been through security scans 4 times before I got to my flight. I would avoid the place like the plague!!

Well, we're a bit off topic, but I do feel the same indeed about CDG. I have to travel for my job from time to time, so I had to use that dreaded place last week again, twice, for flying out and then coming back. Well, I still hate it with passion...and I have experienced some wild places like Astrakhan airport, Vladivostok airport, etc...but CDG is my worst nightmare.

Would you believe that I've given the boat solution a thought already? I do like to travel by boat very much. Not on those ugly cathedrals of the sea that they still dare to call "paquebots" today (do they also call these "liners" in English), but a regular freight boat that allow half a dozen passengers would suits me just fine...
But I still hope to be able to convince myself that time has indeed come to gather my strength of will, and fly over there (or down under).

I always like to counteract this thread with positive news about Kimi:-

    MARCH 23, 2017

Klien tips Raikkonen to shine in 2017

One former F1 driver has picked a surprising dark horse for 2017 glory.

Ex Red Bull driver Christian Klien says Kimi Raikkonen, who won his only title ten years ago, could be a perfect match for the more aggressive cars of 2017.

"I think the new cars will really suit him," the Austrian told Krone newspaper.

Indeed, as Sebastian Vettel often struggled for patience and results in 2016, Raikkonen regularly looked the most competitive Ferrari driver.

1997 world champion Jacques Villeneuve told Auto Bild: "Kimi drives as he talks -- cool, controlled and focused only on what is important.

"Maybe he's a bit slower than Vettel, but Kimi almost always gets the most out of the car."

However, Klien is less optimistic about the likely form of another Finn, Mercedes' new recruit Valtteri Bottas.

"Bottas will be unimpressive against Hamilton in the first year," he predicted.

Lauda scoffs at Raikkonen struggle theory

F1 legend Niki Lauda has scoffed at one controversial explanation for Kimi Raikkonen's Melbourne struggle.

The Mercedes team chairman admitted he was surprised by the performance gap between race winner Sebastian Vettel and his Ferrari teammate Raikkonen on Sunday.

"I don't know what went wrong for Kimi," Lauda told the German broadcaster RTL. "The different to Sebastian was significant, when normally the two of them are quite close together."

One arguably malicious explanation is that, now at the age of 37, Finn Raikkonen might be struggling physically with the new-generation F1 cars, particularly amid rumours he indulges in alcohol and tobacco.

Shortly after the race in Melbourne, Lauda hit back: "He was behind from the start. And we can see that he is not tired. Look at him sitting there comfortably in his sunglasses and not a bead of sweat!"
