McLaren 720S - 2017

Agree with all that and why I was in awe of the car when we saw one many years ago when they were new or near new. Now my wife doesn't give a toss about all that technical stuff and only saw the car for what it looked like and was completely uninterested ... and I have to agree, the F1 from "just" a styling point of view was as bland as a Toyota Corolla.

Disappointed that G. Murray was so heavily influenced by the NSX, a car where Honda's goal was to make a midengined car as usable as an Accord ... not what I would buy a midengined car for!

I rarely agree with your posts, but could not agree more with you on the blandness of the F1. Seeing it live has been one of the most underwhelming moments of my life. It pictures so well and all the technology, purity etc. had me really excited but when I saw it my reaction was, that's it....

 

Does anyone know whether the 720S has the same "fuel cut" transmission system as the 675LT?

I don't know definitively but my understanding is the 720s is an evolution of the 675LT WHICH IS THE BEST DRIVING MACHINE EVER so .. maybe possibly yes

I traded mine for a 675LT and never looked back. 458 was the best modern car I've driven. Until I got the McLaren (not trying to start a war here but I'm being honest).

Now whether you should, well that's up to you Depends on what moves you. Financially maybe not. The 720S is much more of the 'supercar' though (doors, tub, suspension, power).

 

frefan, marknc and myself all have p1's, 675 LT's, etc., along with 458's (or had).

All three of us go across the different marquees.

We are pretty big fans of 675 LT's and 720s.

 

Yes I would.

I loved my 458 but but when I got my 650S I found I was driving the 458 less and less so I eventually sold it. Once you get used to that kind of power & torque the 458 starts to feel slow. The 720S is like blending the 650S, the 458 and a 675LT. It's got qualities of all those cars plus enough unique features to have a personality of its own.

 

Totally agree with this. I had the stepping stones of two 12C Spiders and a 650S Spider before the 675LT coupe and then 675LT Spider.

 

No offense Mark, but it seems to me you buy basically everything from McLaren what is new.

 

No offense taken! Because I bought a P1 before they closed the order book I'm able to get the special cars from McLaren so that's what I'm buying now. I would have bought a LaFerrari if they would sold me one but I didn't have enough buying history (only 3 Ferraris) to qualify.

However I'm also in love with McLaren regular series cars (570S and 720S) which I think are more fun to drive than Ferrari's comparable models (California and 488). And Ferrari doesn't really have a car that competes with the 675LT yet. By the time they do I'll have a McLaren 720S Spider and won't be willing to give it up.

But I LOVE my FF. McLaren has nothing like that.

 

I'm glad you can afford all these cars Mark, definitely inspiring! The arrogance of Ferrari I do not comment, as a (in the meantime) huge McLaren enthusiast I just hope they will not go the same way.

 

I don't think Ferrari is arrogant and I'm not upset with them in any way. They have a limited number of these sorts of cars, and many buyers with a long and loyal history with them, so they absolutely should to reward their most loyal buyers first. I still love Ferrari. I enjoy the heck out of my FF and I'm certain it won't be my last Ferrari.

The chance to get in with McLaren on the ground floor was one of the reasons why I put the deposit down on the P1 but then when I got a chance to drive one (long before the final money was due) I knew it would be the beginning of a long-time love affair. Even in that brief drive of a prototype around the Top Gear track at Dunsfold I could already feel the transformation the company was making toward really nailing driver engagement. 570S is a very nice step up for them and 720S is an even bigger one.

 

im interested in how you started your relationship with McLaren. could anyone with the funds buy a p1 or did you have to be invited? how did the trip to test prototype p1 at dunsfold happen? that sounds absolutely amazing.

I had opportunity to buy 918 when it was first announced. because there wasn't that much initial interest in spyder, Porsche contacted me since I recently bought a gt3 and panamera. unfortunately, I declined despite actually having the money readily available at that time. we were still in recession and i wasn't sure a hybrid supercar would work. I could have owned it for a year or so, sold it for $500k profit, then used that to buy rs, then an r and sold them both for another huge profit, etc

spiderman anyone with funds could have bought a p1. I, like Mark, wanted a LaFerrari but couldn't get one either. I only had 8 Ferraris, including an F40 and F50 but not the Enzo (apparently that was my downfall).

the Dunsfold trip was amazing, anyone with a deposit could drive on track. I was luck enough to drive in *pouring* rain which was quite exhilarating. where else do you get an opportunity to drive someone else's p1, in the rain, on a track, with virtually no liability You ought to see the 100 foot rooster tail that comes off the back of a P1 when you press DRS in pouring rain haha

I'll echo everything mark has said, sounds like we have identical stories and agree with everything he said to the letter. I've had nothing but incredible experiences with McLaren. They really do treat their customers well.

My P1 was delivered to me at the Austin GP after the F1 race. The keys handed to me by Jensen Button in front of a huge crowd of people. What a day! (we later talked about F40's as he just got his lol and wanted my driving advice. just let that sink in a minute).

Another time I was at the factory specing my P1 and McLaren handed me the keys of a 675LT to take out for the day. Go wherever I want, have fun! later when I returned they explained I was the first non-McLaren employee to drive a 675LT. even before journalists. They loaned me the factory car to drive all day around Woking and go wherever I wanted. All they wanted in return was my feedback on the car. Thats incredible.

Or how about the time I got to drive a factory 650S Le Mans edition from London to LeMans. On race day drive 2 (very high-speed) parade laps, with 100,000 fans in attendance cheering us on. yeah I can actually say I've driven le mans!! Oh I was behind Chris Goodwin driving the 1995 Le Mans winning F1LM car. Oh what a sight that was. Seriously it doesn't get much better than that!

The difference in corporate culture between Ferrari and McLaren is wider than the differences in their cars (which is huge as well).
