I have often wondered why there has never been a thread in this group discussing the Maserati Kyalami.

It may not be one of Maserati’s most stunning designs, but it certainly oozes a certain restrained elegance, and is a most practical touring Maserati.

Only 200 examples were produced over its seven year production period from 1977 to 1983, strangely the same as the Merak 2000 GT. This information is taken from a 1946 to 1990 production table, showing year by year production numbers for all pre-Biturbo models from the two A6 1500GTs by Pinin Farina produced in 1946 to the last nine Royales produced in 1990, kindly sent to me back in 2009 by Sig. Ermanno Cozza.

    According to those figures;

    1977 – 52 cars
    1978 - 60 cars
    1979 - 38 cars
    1980 - 12 cars
    1981 – 22 cars
    1982 - 8 cars
    1983 - 8 cars

Of which 126 had 4.2-litre engines and 74 had 4.9-litre engine, and only 25 of the 200 models were fitted with automatic transmission.

I think it’s time this most underrated of Maseratis was given the publicity it deserves, so let’s hear from you owners !!!

I've always liked these. I consider them to be gentlemen's touring cars. Maybe more at home in an Aston Martin atmosphere than an Italian car atmosphere.

I am not an owner, but always viewed them as very nicely styled cars. 'Restrained elegance' indeed - the perfect executive's GT... What is their performance like? What automatic box did they use, the Chrysler TorqueFlite?

And then there is The Elephant in the Room... it's so hard to let them 'stand alone' - they are so very much tied to the DeTomaso Longchamp.

    Cheers, - Art

The first one with the Fozzy Bear covered dash was an "interesting" choice. ;)

I got a ride in one back in 86 at the Maserati International event from a very nice German member. That one was a 5 speed. It's a car ... A lot of DeTomaso but with a Maserati motore.

I agree. Looks like a rebadged Longchamp more than the Longhamp looks like a rebadged Maserati.

There is a topic about the Kyalami, with good info, but no contributions for a while now:
    http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/maserati/443693-kyalami.html

I agree with finlandese in that topic, about the Kyalami and the Longchamp: "In my opinion they are both great cars."

I've seen Kyalami's in real life many times and (probably because of that) I think it's easy to tell them apart. The Kyalami does not only have another engine than the Longchamp, but also among other things other wheels and another interior (both in Maserati style I think).
I almost bought one years ago but after a testdrive and some research (the car needed work) decided to continue my search for a Khamsin, which was my first option.
The Kyalami sold rather well in Holland, somewhere between 5 and 10 cars I think, which was not bad for this small country.

    Hey,
Funny to see my Kyalami at the opening of the thread. Those are the pictures from the previous owner before I bought the car. Here are some pictures of the current restoration and when my car was presented at the Barcelona motorshow in 1977.
Its a great driver and some say that from all the Maserati GTs it has the best handling.

The second car shown at the beginning was restored last year by a friend from Modena and then went to a collection in the netherlands

    Greetings from Berlin
    Dirk

Aside from the engine swap, what other mechanical changes happened when it became a Maserati? Did the Longchamp also have that rear end subframe setup?

I love the muppet-skin dashboard cover too.

no signifigant chassis changes (perhaps different spring rates at the front). Longchamp/Deauville chassis was excellent, and was also used for the QP III

Somehow I am not such a big fan of the Longchamp but love the design of the Kyalami which appears much more elegant to me. For most it is probably a love/hate kind of design. In reality it functions much better that in pictures. Unfortunately you don´t get to see them very often

Years ago there were a couple floating around. But to be legal back then they needed conversion. I don't think they ever got that so they were a hard sell back them. Now that's only a problem in California. Frank M might know where they are?

There was a Kyalami in the same class I was in at this year's Amelia Island Concours. I've seen that car a few times as it lives in the Southeast.

This is the car while it was being judged. The judge with the yellow cap looking at the trunk is Keith Martin.

It still has a Dutch licence plate.

According to the plate it was in Holland from 2007 and was exported in 2015.

    Probably chassis AM129.0088

I have one too and I still wander if it is a beautiful one or a "ugly" one, But it is a very luxury car, top of the bill I presume at the time of his birth !!

Hello, can someone show me some pictures of the fuel filler caps in a Kyalami. I have my kyalami equipped with fuel filler capes with a wooden design pattern on it. It looks very strange but maybe it are the original ones. So I want to compare it with other owner's impressions. You can reply also via [email protected]
