Replacing cam pulleys at belt change - 355

    And I have not heard one single person make that suggestion. That was not the position John or I were taking.

    I am mechanically minded so if it had my car I would have wanted to see the defective part before making a decision where as my buddy is not so I wanted to double check if this is a known issue before advising him. If the new belts failed and he did not replace the pulley I would have felt awful advising him not to. He has decided for peace of mind to give the go ahead. I told him to ask for the old ones back when he collects the car and I will take some pics to see what everyone thinks.

    Chain sprockets certainly wear, but I've never heard of a belt pulley wearing tbh.

    Absolutely. In my state it is the law that all old parts must be returned unless the owner advises otherwise. I have a box of load of old gaskets, spark plugs, belts, hoses, etc from my 30k service. 15k was before the law was in effect.

    I had assumed initially it was the cam pulleys but could well be the crank pulley, we will soon find out.

    I thought the reference was to the cam belt tensioner pulley....bit of confusion here.

    I read lots of this on this board and I'm confused as my pulley fences are crimped so tight I can't for the life of me see them coming loose. :)

    355 cam pulleys do not have fences.

    Is there not 'peer to peer lending' in the USA? I currently have £55,000 earning 12% secured by property with thebridgecrowd.com, plus some other investmens at 5-6%. I am not trying to boast, just to make people aware that good rates can be got. But then if I'd known that before I bought the Ferrari I might not have become an owner at all!

    Right - but the drive pulleys do and I assume that's what they meant.

    I had one. Clearly the result of the belt riding the fence when the factory rear timing drive roller bearing was failing with 17K miles on it. Welded the fence and put in the ball bearing update, all good now.

    Collected the car with my buddy on Sat.

    What were stated as pulleys by the dealer turned out to be the two cambelt tensioners!

    The main dealer claimed they had originally quoted to change just the cambelts without replacing the tensioners, which is new one for me, as on whatever car I have ever owned the tensioners get replaced at the same time as the belts, as its those that usually fail causing belt issues.

    The charge for replacing the 2 belts and 2 tensioners, plus carrying out an oil service and swapping out a few leaky cam seals came to £3700 inc vat , say $4650 US

    The supply of 9 litres of oil alone cost £250 ex labour in that bill, a quick google found that you can buy 5 litres of the same Shell Helix oil for £22.

    I think he could have got the same job carried out by an Indie for at least a £1000 less, anyone had similar work carried out recently?
