How do you protect your FF or any Ferrari from pothole damage? I drive both Ferraris all year, snow and all and in NW Ohio and especially Michigan and Indiana there are potholes everywhere. I've broken 3 FF front right wheels and 5 front right tires over the last few years.

However, I've discovered how to save my tires and wheels from any damage (no not parking the Ferraris to drive a stupid Prius) but check the photo below, the single snow tire in front of the summer tires and wheels! I had one of the broken wheels repaired and mounted a brand new snow tire and would you believe, no tire damage on the car this year because I was prepared with the spare ready to go.

    Now you have it.

Hi Rick, I am sorry. It is problably because English is not my native language, but what do you actually suggest? Having a spare wheel ready does not diminish your chances of getting hurt by a pothole I would say... Please explain!

I think that is it. There is no solution...I had 9 flat tires over 3 years with my 911 because of chicago potholes.

Anyone try 19inch winters with higher sidewall tires(keeping same diameter). Was thinking of trying this for next Chicago winter...

    LOL!!

I used to do this when I had an Alpina as a daily driver. I got tired of it so yes, I gave in and went to a more "normal" car for a daily.

I guess having a pit crew amount of spare wheels and tires will decrease the chance of getting a flat or a wheel dent. It kind of works like insurance because you will rarely need it if you have more than enough protection. Things in life are strange like that and there are no explanations to things like that.

By the way, you might want to put all those tires inside plastic bag to maximize the rubber's lifespan especially it's most likely they will probably never get used.

I am still waiting to see if anyone has decided to use the 19" wheels from Cali on the FF.

I agree. They would offer a little assistance but they would not really solve the issue.

I have 19's on my Cali T and have had 19's on the two previous Cali's for the winter tires, and zero broken wheels, zero blown tires! Yes, higher profile 19 inch wheels & tires are a fix! I have NOT tried 19's on the FF though.

Knokki, your English would be far better than any other language for me! Sorry, it was meant as a joke. I just got lucky this year and managed to miss all the potholes. The spare wheel & tire was simply good luck.

Any little extra "meat" helps. Please inform us if you ever have a chance to see if Cali or Cali T wheels fit on the FF. One dealership mechanic told me yes on that but another forum member was told otherwise.

A little extra will help but I don't know if it will really protect you against everything. Remember an extra 1" of profile = ½" of actual protection, that's it. The more contributing factors, in my experience which includes decades of low profile driving in bad areas, are suspension calibration and weight of the car.

Having the spare wheels ready is smart if you constantly have problems. This way you can get the spares on right away and continue to drive while you send out the damaged wheels and tires for replacement/repair.

Don't get me wrong, I think higher profile tires via smaller wheel diameter can help, but I don't think its a cure all.

    I find this wild lol

After m cars, Lambo, slammed Porsche turbo and my gt2, Mclaren etc in ny and literally NYC driving I have never ever had a blowout, broken or bent rim, nothing

Crazy that some people have such issues and sorry for the headaches

I noticed the roads were much worse in the fall when I road tripped my Superleggera to NYC from Florida, but I'm still able to avoid everything
    Be safe

The weight of the FF likely makes it more problematic with its low profile sidewalls.

Just suffered my 4th blowout on the FF after hitting a pothole in San Diego. Right front.

Last week, we ordered a Defender Octa (June delivery) as a new DD. Driving an FF as a daily ain’t always easy, even if we’ve managed to put 36,000 miles on this 2014 example after reaching 24,000 on our previous 2012 model.

Oh no, sorry my friend. Thats such a bummer. I wish I had a good solution for you. For me the too easy to damage wheels and tires is the weak spot of the vehicle. I dont think its just the extra weight, though that is likely a little bit of a factor, I think the biggest issue is the thin sidewall + not as wire tire (wider helps spread out the impact force more) + suspension geometry which really keys the tires into the road which is great for a sports car, but less great for being easily damaged. You could fit taller sidewall tires, but that comes with its own issues as well. Have you tried the Pirelli PZ4 tires? Pirelli typically have a stiffer sidewall, though, I am not sure how much improvement it would produce in the real world.

Thanks, Buddy. You did try to caution me about this several years ago!

We’ve been running 255 front and 305 rear Michelins in an attempt to gain a bit more sidewall. We also run them at 34 psi all around instead of the 32 psi recommended by the factory for Pirellis. Admittedly, this was the first blowout since upgrading from the stock 245 - 295 Michelin combo. Don’t historically like Pirelli street tires but maybe we should try them.

But there have also been two PTU replacements and we had to replace the front passenger seat motor for $10K since it is only available as an assembly (and not covered by the extended warranty which we cough up for each year). Just seems like there’s always something with the FF, whereas all of our other Ferraris have been relatively trouble free.

Still love the FF’s enough to have owned two but maybe it’s time to move on or at least never take one on a long road trip again (which sorta defeats the purpose).

It’s hard to see the point when you have that bummer on a road trip, and then the other costs, really sorry about that Anir. You’ve done everything you could. I notice in the Lusso owners manual the pressures for the Pirelli tires are about 4psi lower front and 3.3 lower rear than than the Michelin. I think you might be happily surprised with the PZ4, they are maybe not quite as good as the MPS4S, but they are a good tire.

Wow, I thought all the roads in southern CA were smooth. In the northeast we get lots of potholes. This year is particularly bad since we've had several snow falls and regular freezing and thawing. When I drive the FF my eyes are on the road, and I mean literally ON THE ROAD.

They robbed you on the motor for the seat if that is what failed. It is the same motor as a bunch of BMWs use. They tried to hit me with this repair and did a little research and actually found a used one for about $25 shipped. Ferrari is so scandalous with these games and prices they try and pull. Makes me sick and not want to have anything to do with the brand.
