Modern classic, 3 pedal V12 Ferrari for a first gen, twin turbo V8 Macca? I wouldn't make that trade, even if marque and future price tends were not in the equation.

Good luck. This is an awesome "problem" to have.

They are very different cars, so it depends what you would use them for.

I'm no expert, but believe the MP4-12c prices have not yet bottomed out, while 550 prices still have some upward mobility.

The current values are probably slightly in favor of the 550 (hence a dealer offering the trade).

Really, comes down to what you want. The Maclaren is a great car, not sure its a classic like the 550, but sure is nice.

Honestly, I would not, but could see both parties being happy.

    No bad choice.

    Best,

The 550 is the long term bet value wise, and is much easier to sell.
Mclaren has introduced a range of new models that will impact on the Value of the Mclaren MP4 12c and at this point its only 5 years old. If it was a 650S its a consideration.
I highly recommend getting on the Mclaren forums and do you home work.
They have there own issues and you cannot have things like oil leaks fixed by a dealer its a part replacement, ie Gearbox... yep the whole box. Mclaren are yet to authorize independent maintenance organizations.
If you do decide to go down this route get the dealer to add the Mclaren extended warranty in the deal, yes Mclaren offer extended warranty. on cars over 5 years old.

Best of lock with the decision.

I live in Taxifornia...so taxes suck even on a straight across trade...some states have no sales tax or one make you pay taxes on the delta. How is Florida?

If maintenance wasn't absurd on the McLaren, it would be something to consider...but as it is they're absurd to fix outside of warranty.

Don't look up what a steering rack or transmission costs. :)

How about if 458 & 550 showed parity? Would anyone do that swap?

Here in Australia it's quite close, an imported(british) 550 listed recently and is seen as less desirable due to salted roads, moisture and corrosion sold recently for approx $300k.
2010-2011 458's with some usage advertised from $360k.
Presented with a swap for a 458, i think i would still keep the 550.

Interesting question since those are the 2 Ferraris I own.
I love my 550 as much as I love my 458.

They are such different kinds of fun.
Stick-shift, high torque power versus paddle-shift DCT high-rev power.

If I could only own one of them, it would be a tough choice.

That's what I was thinking. I'm sort of thinking of doing my 550 swap for a challenge car only because I don't drive my 550 and put more miles on race tracks. But I actually don't like DCT except for racing so I would never own a DCT for the street.

Darius- Rosso Corsa and Crema on that 550, UK resale favorites. The 458 is a much better long term deal than a similar McLaren MP4-12C. Would still keep the Maranello personally, however. There were only 3083 550s and probably close to 20,000 458s.

I would not change the 550 for a McLaren. I agree, if you were to add a car, the 458 is much better choice.

What about a 575M F1 with FHP trade for a 458? Is that a wise choice? Very different cars. Is one appreciating and the other continuing on a drop with 20,000 of them made?

You are not going to find a dealer who wants that deal. FHP does not increase the value on a 575M that much in the States. Incidentally, I have one, too.

Having owned both cars I decided on keeping the 550. Such different offerings but the 550 is a more "usable" car. It kind of flies under the radar if you will which allows it to be more of a daily driver. A modern classic which typifies the Ferrari brand. Don't rush to trade it. Just add to it:)

Keeping money out of it: Absolutely NOT. Keep the 550. A proper GT, looks fantastic, V12, extremely usable. 12C is not a good looking car (subjective of course). May be a fast car, granted...but will soon be ''outdated''. Sounds weird maybe as the 550 is of course far more dated. I don't think it'll age at all well, like 355/360's with F1 gearbox.

Putting the money factor in again: Even more incentive to keep the 550!
