I'd say his chances would be better if it were a road course race over Indy so I'd put his chances at middle to the bottom of the pack. Like others have said, it doesn't really matter where you start at Indy since there is so much passing and luck involved in where you end up.

I also expect him to crash in practice. It's a lot to learn and, frankly, it's part of the Indy hazing process.

If anyone can make the best of this, though, it's Fernando!

The question for me is how hard he crashes trying to get up to speed. I can see him understeering into the wall in either turn 1 or 3.

No driver does this anymore as they can't test.

    Such a silly situation, sigh.

I was watching the NBC broadcast yesterday and Paul Tracy was giving "advice" to Alonso. Tracy said he needs to let the car give him the last 5% and don't get too involved.

I could see a word bubble over his Alonso's head. It said "who is this moron?"

I think it's more common to over drive the corner, lose the back end, and wake up 20 seconds later facing the wrong way.

Qualifying at Indy is half driver, half race engineer, and Andretti has just announced that Scott Dixon's former engineer will be working with Fred...

They do some testing, but not a lot sure.

They do a ton on the simulator though - which is a lot of work and very useful these days.

Losing the backend after the apex is indeed the Indy way. But, I've spent years watching Nando push the front end until the tires bite. I thought he would eventually revert to form.

    He's a rat alright.
I don't want to see anyone crash but suspect he just might trying too hard to prove he's not another washed up F1 driver swirling the drain.

Big balls. Great skill. Although I think Sato's was my favorite - bouncing off the wall twice. Thought he was going to bite it for sure.
