That's OK! Under-thinking is what really gets you in trouble. I think you will be just fine. You look to be taking a methodical approach and thinking before acting...bravo! For example you over think the welding and cutback of the lock ring. But that's OK because cutting it back like you did while not necessary makes it all clean and tidy. I like it.
Okey, i think this is pretty much it. What i have to do is measure backlash, check contact with prussian blue, attach intermediate plate and clutch shaft. Just need to hope that loctite 660 in those splines+welds keep things together. First testdrive is months away, but i will get back to this thread to report how it holds up. So, why i took it apart was that i had whining noise in driving low gears and i found pieces of metal in sump magnet(part of failed staking lip of ringnut and general iron particles). when i removed clutch it was obvious that i had some serious problems in there, as clutchshaft had massive play on it. Clutchshaft nut was fully loosened and bearing inner races wasnt held in place anymore. That type of gear has thrust so it rubbed in casing too. Im not sure where that whine originated, becouse theres no wear or pitting on any gear. Shaft bearings rolled quietly and smoothly. So i hope whine came from that gear leaning partly on that collar where bevel gears bearing sits. It was annoying, but what surprises me most the thing operated pretty much flawlesly. We will see. Bearing preload is altered by changing shim sizes under those bearing caps, or you want to see the tool what used to measure it?

I use an old snap-on wrench to check preloads, ferrari manual doesnt give a trustworthy values of preload so you just have to guestimate and go by feel of it. My bearings looked like new so i didnt change them and prettymuch just checked that theres some preload Image Unavailable, Please Login

Tommy, I'm the 1st person I believe to weld the lock ring to the shaft when there was shaft/gear damage. Often you see broken teeth means dead gear or not so great pitted gear and splines on clutch shaft pulled. People think the 355 box with the more spline shaft an upgrade but all it does is make up for not staking the ringnut properly. Use mig or fluxcore not tig. You also have to build the circumferential weld up in short bursts 180 degrees apart. This prevents warping. Tig just has a larger heat effected zone. Mig or flux you can get in and get out with minimal heat that can warp the shaft. A couple guys this failed on because they were tig welded. I suspect the tig welder did typicial tig process starting in 1 spot going 360 until he got back to that spot. That puts huge heat into the part and imo explains the warp. A warped shaft is a failure and does not work except to destroy more parts.
Yes, its still holding (currently 500 miles on it). I did tig weld it by 309 rod, altho as fbb said tig might not be the way to go. I did not weld it fully around, but almost. Also materials are not that nice to weld and loctite doesnt help the process when its drawn in to the puddle. Only time will tell how long it goes
Thanks! I think I'll try to Mig weld it as FBB suggests. But I would like to fill up the splines with the loctite 660 as you did. I have ordered a used gear with (hopefully) 26 teeth and waiting for delivery.
Yes, you have just one problem doing it so, that those gears are grinded to matching pairs to ensure correct fit. Atleast in theory.
Sh*t!!! I got the gear today and it has 27 teeth. Ordered from Eurospares... The guy said he had checked it himself that it was 26... And I suspect it's the gear for Pinion.. The inner diameter is a lot smaller too... Soon my only option is to find a way to repair my gear teeth ( don't know if someone even been that desperate before) or I'll have to made new shaft and gear... $$$$
